The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the profession of journalism. The students taking this introductory course will learn and understand the fundamental elements of journalism. A variety of issues related to journalism will be discussed. The students completing the course will have a basic understanding about journalism, news, news values, sources, news selection, news writing, and ethical values. Topics to be covered are: the mission of journalism; journalism as truth-telling; journalism and the public; verification; journalism as the fourth estate; journalists and their sources; journalism as a public forum; news values; basic elements of news; techniques of news writing; techniques of news interviewing.
