Generally, crime in which something is stolen is theft and the criminal is a thief. Here are some more particular words:
Burglars broke into our office last night and took the computers.
My house was burgled twice last year, so I put in a burglar alarm.
Police caught Perry after he broke a window and climbed into the flat. He was found guilty of breaking and entering.
Don’t put your wallet in your back pocket: pickpockets will steal it.
The shoplifter claimed she had simply forgotten to pay when she left the store with a book.
Crimes committed by people
in business or in influential jobs
The Government promised to fight bribery and corruption after officials were accused of accepting $1.5 million in bribes from foreign firms.
She learned to forge the Director’s signature and for five years had been embezzling large amounts of money from her company.
Stevens was imprisoned for a $60000 fraud in which he sold holidays that did not really exist.
The company IBM kept false accounts for six years and were guilty of tax evasion amounting to $75000.
Five businessmen were charged with conspiracy to sell illegal weapons.
Two of Ms Green’s employees lied to the judge to protect her. They were both convicted of perjury.
