Gardiner, later a celebrated missionary pioneer, became a cadet at the Royal Naval College in Portsmouth at the age of 13. He travelled widely, to the U.S.A., Peru, Chile, India, China, Australia and Cape Town. He was appointed Commander in 1825. After the death of his first wife in 1834, he decided to become a missionary and travelled to Cape Town. Unaware of the 6th Frontier War, he travelled to Natal via Kaffraria, a difficult and dangerous journey. He began a mission station at Berea before setting out to meet Dingaan. He succeeded in negotiating a treaty which granted him a vast tract of land, including the original grants held by the settlers. He then travelled to Port Elizabeth to meet Sir Benjamin D'Urban, the Governor of the Cape Colony, to have the treaty confirmed. On his return he moved his mission to an area north of the Tugela, where he was visited by Piet Retief. After Retief and his party were killed, he returned to Port Natal and later that year left with his family for Rio de Janeiro. See Mendelssohn, vol. 1, p. 587-8 and D.S.A.B. vol. 2, p. 254-5.
