HU. 13 CURRICULUM FOR BA

Purpose: This is a first formative qualification. A successful student will have acquired the intellectual competencies and practical skills to discuss, problematise and investigate human conduct and interaction, particularly in the South African context.
There are four different clusters or specialisation options in this programme to choose from. These options are listed below.

The curriculum for the BA with specialisation in Communication and Languages programme consists of 22 semester modules compiled as follows:

  Majors: Communication (*or Theory of Film and Television Studies on condition that there are no timetable clashes) and a language (Afrikaans, English, French, Greek, isiZulu, Latin (not offered in 2018), Linguistics, Modern Greek and Sepedi.)

  Electives: A language (Afrikaans, English, French, Greek, isiZulu, Latin (not offered in 2018), Linguistics, Modern Greek, Northern Sotho 1A&1B, Sepedi or Zulu 1A&1B) and Classical Culture and Mythologies.
  

• 
  Alternative electives: Philosophy and Religion. (These modules may be chosen only if there are no timetable clashes.)
  

**Students who have achieved an A or B for English in matric may substitute English 1C &

1D with another elective. Students who select English as a major should register for

English 1A&1B and may substitute English 1C&1D with another elective. Student who

passes English 1C&1D may be permitted to register for English 2A&2B at the discretion of

the Head of Department of English.

Majors:

  The first major must be selected from the following list of Social Sciences subjects: Anthropology, Development Studies, Historical Studies, Politics and Sociology.

  The second major may be selected from the list of Social Sciences or Communication or Classical Culture and Mythologies. If the second major is selected from the list of subjects other than the Social Sciences, at least six modules from the list of Social Sciences electives must be selected.
