Choose and answer
Use any set of word cards. Put them in a pile at the front 
of the class and ask a student to choose one and read it 
aloud. Then ask a question about this word, choosing a 
linguistic question or a general knowledge question, e.g., 
for the word card 
violin 
in Unit 4, ask 
How many strings 
does it have?

Circle it!
Write a selection of

2 numbers (or stick a set of word 
cards on the board) at a height your students can reach. 
Divide the students into two teams lining up facing the 
board. Give a different color marker to the student at the 
front of each team. Say a number (or give a definition of 
an item) from the board. The two students race to circle 
it on their team’s color. The two students then pass the 
markers to the next student on their team and go to the 
back of the line. Repeat until all the numbers/word cards 
are circled. The team with the most circles wins.
Class survey 
Divide the students into groups. Students draw a chart 
with a column per group member, plus one extra, and 
rows for each question in the survey. They leave the top 
left-hand square blank and write the survey questions 
down the left-hand column and the names of all the 
students in their group at the top of the other columns. 
Students then ask and answer in their groups. They 
record each person’s answers with checks, Xs, or notes, 
depending on the survey. Pool the results as a class, using 
a similar chart on the board. Record the number of checks 
or make notes as ideas are suggested, add checks when 
other groups have the same idea or opinion.
Copycat 
Ask a pair of students to the front of the class and give them 
a series of instructions to perform or mime

(Take note of the 
sequence of instructions you give.) Then ask another pair of 
students to the front of the class. Say 
Copycat
. The students 
have to perform the same actions in the same order as the 
first pair. The rest of the class can correct and help. Repeat 
with different actions and students.
