Interpretation of Shallow Seismic and Microbathymetric Data

Collected Between the İstanbul Strait and Tekirdağ
In the Marmara Sea northern shelf, the region between the Bosphorus and Tekirdag, in order to support the definiton of Quaternary Evolution of working area at a depth of until 100 m, high resolution shallow seismic echo data and multi-beam data until a depth of 1250 metres are collected within the framework of the project number 5783 which is called “The Study of Geological Evolution of Kucukcekmece and Buyukcekmece Lagoons through High Resolution Shallow Seismic Data.” The project is supported by the Istanbul University Scientific Research Projects Coordination Unit. The data collected are evaluated and commented together with the high resolution shallow seismic data collected through Sparker energy source in the previous years by ships of and boats of the Department of Cruise, Hydrography and Oceanography of Turkish Navy. Seismic stratigraphy of units and structural elements of working area are shown through commenting seismic cross-sections. Structural elements are represented by northwest-southeastward strike slip faults, north-northeast-south-southwestward faults, and nearly east-westward faults locally. Besides, a correlation of land geology and stratigraphic units are realized.
In the shelf region, bathymetry map is prepared through depth data of work place in centimeter sensitivity collected by multi-beam microbathymetry data. A study of prepared bathymetry map reveals that the bottom topography has some slope in north-south way starting from shore. For example, the contour that shows 60 metre depth is situated 5-10 kilometers away from the shore (between Istanbul and Tekirdag). The mid-region at 60-65 metres is quite smooth whereas the southward region is sloping starting from 65 metre-contour. The flat working place which situated at mid-region expands towards its west. The sloping region in the south of flat region is a westward extension of bathymetric perpendicularity formed through possible normal faulting. In this region and in the south of it, the sea bottom starting from 100 metres falls abruptly and forms a very steep cliff east-westwardly. Starting from the end of the cliff in south, sea bottom depth forms 3 different basins reaching 1200 meters. These basins are nearly northeast-southwestwardly and separated from each other by ridges reaching 600-800 meters from the basin bottom.
