German neo-Nazi sent to prison for mocking Holocaust

32-year-old German neo-Nazi sentenced to 18 months in prison after posting a picture of Auschwitz with an offensive caption.

Ben Ariel, 05/01/18 05:08

A 32-year-old German neo-Nazi was sentenced on Thursday to 18 months in prison for incitement after posting a picture of a miniature of the Auschwitz death camp on Facebook with an offensive caption, The Associated Press reports.

According to the news agency, Judge Manfred Weber at the district court in Hohenstein-Ernstthal in eastern Germany told the man "you made fun of Auschwitz survivors — that's very bad."

The sentence of the previously convicted neo-Nazi also took into consideration his earlier charge for criminal assault and the posting of a photomontage of Adolf Hitler in combination with a swastika and firecrackers.

The man from Glauchau in Saxony, whose name was not given in line with German privacy rules, can appeal the conviction.. MORE - http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/240293

Erdan can't believe Foreign Ministry would oppose UNRWA cuts

Likud Minister doubts there's truth to TV report claiming the Foreign Ministry opposes Trump's plan to cut aid to UNRWA.

Elad Benari, 05/01/18 00:08

Public Security and Strategic Affairs Minister Gilad Erdan (Likud) responded on Thursday evening to a television news report claiming that Israel's Foreign Ministry opposes U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to halt aid to UNRWA, the UN’s agency for “Palestinian refugees”.

“I find it difficult to believe that the Israeli Foreign Ministry opposes a cut in funding to UNRWA. The same body that perpetuates the refugee problem instead of solving it and which aids terror in all kinds of proven ways? The Foreign Ministry is against cuts to this body? I hope very much that this is not true,” tweeted Erdan.

Nikki Haley, the U.S. Ambassador to the UN, on Tuesday included UNRWA in warning the Palestinian Authority (PA) it risked losing the hundreds of millions of dollars in aid it receives from the United States if it continues to shun peace negotiations.

Hours later, President Donald Trump wrote on Twitter that the PA does not show the United States appreciation or respect, hinting that due to this fact, it does not deserve the large amounts of aid it received from the U.S. annually.

Thursday’s report on Hahadashot (formerly Channel 2 News) said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly opposes the cessation of aid to UNRWA, arguing that such a move "could worsen the humanitarian situation and lead to a humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza." This opinion is seconded by the senior members of the IDF and the security establishment, who note the upsurge in rocket launches from Gaza recently and warn that these cuts could cause the Hamas-controlled territory to explode.

The report also said that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has been holding back-channel talks with the Trump administration in an attempt to restore U.S. aid to UNRWA. If accurate, this would contradict Netanyahu's public statements calling on countries around the world to cease funding UNRWA, which has been a source of many anti-Israel resolutions.

For years, UNRWA has been a target for criticism in light of Hamas's activity in its educational institutions and the use of its facilities by Palestinian Arab terrorist organizations in Gaza. UNRWA was documented storing Hamas rockets and weapons "designed to kill Israeli citizens" in its schools, a fact which the UNRWA chief admitted himself. In addition, the organization has actively taken part in inciting anti-Semitic violence. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/240286 [Hopefull Trump will listed to Erdan and not to Bibi on this matter. Russia: US demand for UN meeting on Iran is 'destructive'

US Amb. Nikki Haley calls on UN to stand with the people of Iran, as Russia's Foreign Minister Ryabkov says involvement is 'destructive.'

Chana Roberts, 05/01/18 13:36

The United Nations Security Council on Friday afternoon will hold an emergency meeting to discuss the recent protests in Iran. The uprising, the largest since a series of mass protests in 2009, began in the city of Mashhad, when demonstrators denounced Iranian President Rouhani over the failure to reduce the country’s high unemployment rates.

Efforts to contain the protests have led to the deaths of at least 21 people.

However, Russia considers the US-initiated meeting to be "harmful and destructive," RIA reported. "We see no role for the United Nations Security Council in this issue," the news agency quoted Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov as saying Thursday. "Iran's domestic affairs have nothing to do with the United Nations Security Council's role."

On Thursday, Iran accused the US of "meddling" in its affairs.

Meanwhile, US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said that "the international community has a role to play" in the drama in Iran. MORE - http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/240307

2Samuel 16:19 And a second time, Whom should I serve? Should I not serve before the face of his son. As I served before the face of your father, so shall I be before your face. 20And Absalom said to Ahithophel, Give your counsel, what we shall do. 21And Ahithophel said to Absalom, Go in to your father's concubines, those he left to keep the house. And all Israel shall hear that you have become odious with your father. And the hands of all who are with you will be strong.

23And they spread out a tent for Absalom on the roof. And Absalom went in to his father's concubines before the eyes of all Israel. 23And the counsel of Ahithophel which he counseled in those days was as one who had inquired at the Word of God. So was all the counsel of Ahithophel, both to David and to Absalom.
10 Palestinians injured, 2 critically, in clash with IDF

Army says troops responded to 'main instigators' in a riot near Bethlehem after being targeted by rocks and firebombs

By Dov Lieber Today, 12:37 pm

Ten Palestinians were injured, two critically, in confrontations with Israeli soldiers in the Deheishe refugee camp south of Bethlehem on Thursday morning, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.

The Israel army said it was responding to violent attacks from rioters.

According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, seven of the injured were hit by live fire and three by rubber-coated bullets. One of the critically injured men was shot in the back, near the spine, and the other was shot in the thigh, puncturing an artery and causing severe bleeding, the ministry said.

The injured were transferred to a hospital in nearby Beit Jala for treatment, according to the ministry.

During IDF activity in the Deheishe refugee camp, violent riots were instigated as rioters threw firebombs and rocks at the troops. In response to the immediate threat, IDF troops used riot dispersal means and fired toward the main instigators,” an IDF spokesperson said.

The clash came a day after 17-year-old Musab Firas al-Tamimi was fatally wounded by IDF fire during a protest in the village of Deir Nidham, near Ramallah.

The army initially said troops at the scene had suspected the teenager of carrying a weapon, but an army spokesperson could not confirm on Thursday that al-Tamimi had indeed been armed.

The West Bank has seen near-daily protests since US President Donald Trump announced that he was recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital on December 6. https://www.timesofisrael.com/10-palestinians-injured-2-critically-in-clash-with-idf/ [If you riot you run the risk of getting ‘neutralized.’ – rdb]

Israeli jets strike Gaza in retaliation for shelling

Army says it targeted 'significant terror infrastructure' in coastal enclave, hours after mortar shells land in open areas in Israel

By Judah Ari Gross Today, 1:38 am

Israeli jets overnight Wednesday-Thursday carried out airstrikes in the Gaza Strip, in retaliation for mortar fire earlier in the day.

Palestinian terrorists in the Gaza Strip had fired three mortar shells into southern Israel on Wednesday, but caused no injuries or damage, the army and police said.

In a late-night statement, the army said the overnight raids targeted “significant terror infrastructure,” without elaborating.

“The IDF will continue to use all the measures at its disposal, above and below ground, to thwart attacks against Israelis,” the military said. “We are prepared and ready for a variety of scenarios and will act against any attempts to violate Israeli sovereignty.”

There were no immediate reports of injuries from the Israeli airstrikes.

The launches from Gaza on Wednesday took place over a period of four hours. Police said two shells landed in open fields in the Eshkol region, and it was not immediately clear where the third landed.

Warning sirens were not triggered by the first two launches, apparently because the shells were heading toward unpopulated areas.

This was the fifth projectile from Gaza to hit Israeli territory in under a week. There have also been a number of unsuccessful attempts, in which rockets were launched at Israel but failed to clear the border, landing instead inside Gaza. Haredi youth say Arabs attackers forced them to say Arabic verses

Two Arab attackers allegedly forced the two ultra-Orthodox youth to declare faith in Islam and say 'Hamas needs to rule' while punching them—documenting everything on their phone cameras; police arrest suspects.

Yishai Porat|Published:  01.04.18 , 13:01

Two ultra-Orthodox youth say they were assaulted early Saturday by two young Arab men while they were making their way to the Pool of Siloam in Jerusalem. The two Haredim filed a complaint with the police, saying the two Arabs cursed at them in Hebrew and Arabic and punched them.

"It was terrible humiliation," said P., one of the Haredi youth. "They forced us to kiss their hands, say verses in Arabic, say derogatory things against the prime minister and say we recognize Hamas's rule. They documented all of it from up close with their phone cameras. We demand the police to investigate it."

The two ultra-Orthodox youth, who were able to flee the scene, did not require medical care.

The Honenu legal NGO, which is representing the two, said the Arab youth tied the Haredi boys' payot (sidelocks) together, forced them to say the Shahada (an Islamic declaration of belief), and forced them to say "Hamas is the best, Hamas needs to rule."

"This incident is reminiscent of darker days in which Jews were humiliated and mistreated," said a Honenu lawyer.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident and have since arrested two suspects from east Jerusalem, aged 18 and 19. The court extended their remand by four days. "This is a grave incident, which was allegedly motivated by racism," police said. https://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-5066359,00.html
With PM’s blessing, Knesset advances bill for death penalty for terrorists

Citing case where killer 'laughed' as he butchered Israelis, PM says in 'extreme' attacks, terrorists 'will be executed'

By Marissa Newman Today, 5:40 pm

The Knesset plenary on Wednesday advanced in its preliminary vote a bill calling for the death penalty for convicted Palestinian killers of Israeli civilians and soldiers, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly threw his support behind capital punishment in “extreme cases.”

The proposed legislation by the Yisrael Beytenu party cleared its initial reading with 52 lawmakers in favor, 49 opposed, after a stormy debate and a nail-biting vote, with the coalition’s majority uncertain until the very end.

The ultra-Orthodox United Torah Judaism lawmakers skipped the vote to consult with their rabbinic leadership on the issue, and other prominent coalition figures, including Jewish Home leader Naftali Bennett, were also absent. The Haredi lawmakers were also seen as protesting the Yisrael Beytenu’s opposition to their bill to shutter minimarkets on Shabbat.

The vote was swiftly condemned by the European Union’s ambassador to Israel.

“The death penalty is incompatible with human dignity. It constitutes inhuman and degrading treatment, does not have any proven deterrent effect and allows judicial errors to become irreversible & fatal,” the EU mission in Israel wrote on Twitter. [Perhaps the august EU ambassador would do well to read from one of the world’s oldest books on dealing with this subject : Genesis 9:5-6 ESV /And for your lifeblood I will require a reckoning: from every beast I will require it and from man. From his fellow man I will require a reckoning for the life of man. “Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image.]

The death penalty is incompatible with human dignity. It constitutes inhuman & degrading treatment, does not have any proven deterrent effect & allows judicial errors to become irreversible & fatal.

— EU in Israel (@EUinIsrael) January 3, 2018

Although the death penalty formally exists in Israeli law, it has only ever been used once — in 1962 in the case of Nazi officer Adolf  Eichmann, one of the architects of the Holocaust.

It is technically allowed in cases of high treason, as well as in certain circumstances under the military law that applies within the IDF and in the West Bank, but is not implemented.

Ahead of the vote, Netanyahu told lawmakers the high-level security cabinet will hold a discussion about the controversial issue after the preliminary reading on Wednesday, and before the first reading of the bill.

In that meeting, Netanyahu said, ministers would address criticism of the proposal by Israel’s security forces.

In his remarks, Netanyahu referred to the July 21 terror attack in the West Bank settlement of Halamish, when a Palestinian terrorist stabbed to death three members of the Salomon family during a family celebration. It was during a condolence visit to the surviving relatives that Netanyahu first voiced his support for the death penalty.

The relatives, “who survived the terrible attack, told me how the terrorist held the knife and slaughtered and laughed,” said Netanyahu, adding that the description left him “dismayed.”

“And I said there are extreme cases, when people carry out horrific crimes after which they don’t deserve to live,” added the prime minister. “Whoever butchers and laughs will not live out his days in prison but will be executed,” said Netanyahu.

The new bill would requiree the support of two of a panel of three judges to carry out the death sentence. Currently, the sentence must be unanimous.

The bill would apply to those convicted of fatal acts of terrorism, based on the Israeli legal definition. In light of the existing law, a Yisrael Beytenu spokesperson confirmed to The Times of Israel, the death penalty would extend to Palestinians convicted of killing IDF soldiers as well as civilians.

In the heated Knesset session, Netanyahu was asked if he supported the death penalty for Jewish terrorists, too. “In principle, yes,” Netanyahu said.

Previous Israeli governments, including those headed by Netanyahu, have rejected the death penalty bill. The Yisrael Beytenu proposal was most recently voted down by lawmakers in 2015, at Netanyahu’s orders, 94-6 (the six being Yisrael Beytenu lawmakers).

Netanyahu’s support for the bill was seen by some observers, including opposition leader Isaac Herzog, as a purely political maneuver to keep his coalition intact. During Wednesday’s debate, Herzog accused Netanyahu of supporting the proposal this time as part of a “cynical political exercise.”

Netanyahu is “capitulating to [Yisrael Beytenu leader] Avigdor Liberman because he’s threatening to dismantle the government,” charged Herzog. Netanyahu presents plan to increase disability benefits

People with disabilities will see their benefits go up twice in 2018: an increase of NIS 340 starting January and another NIS 161 starting July, at the cost of NIS 2 billion; an additional NIS 2.2 billion will be added in two stages by 2021; 'This is a historic move,' PM says.

Yael Friedson, Amir Alon|Published:  01.03.18 , 14:50

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Welfare Minister Haim Katz and Finance Ministry Director-General Shai Babad announced Wednesday the launch of a plan that is set to increase disability benefits by NIS 4.2 billion over the next four years.

The first stage of the plan, at the cost of NIS 1.4 billion, will go into effect retroactively from January 1, 2018.

The second stage, at the cost of NIS 600 million, was scheduled to go into effect in January 2019, but it has been brought forward to July 2018.

The remaining NIS 2.2 billion earmarked for the plan will go into effect in two additional stages by 2021.

The plan is due to be brought to the government for a vote on January 11 and then to the Knesset the next day.

"This is a historic move," Netanyahu said. "This means that in the coming year, disability benefits will increase by NIS 2 billion."

In the first stage of the plan, those eligible for general disability benefits will receive an additional NIS 340 every month, while those eligible for special services will receive an additional NIS 540. In the second stage, both general disability and special services benefits will be increased by an additional NIS 161 a month. Elderly people with disabilities will receive half the sum respectively, since they are also entitled to old age benefits.

Concurrently, NIS 50 million will be allocated to children's disability benefits and an additional NIS 50 million will be allocated to the blind and visually impaired.

"We talk a lot about leading a social policy, and it has no meaning without an economic policy. We're allocating some of the tax revenues to different populations," Netanyahu said.

"We are presenting an improved plan that includes the elderly and the blind," Welfare Minister Katz said. "This is a first step on the way to improving the disabled's situation. At the end of this journey, we need to reach minimum wage." Top PLO official says Trump threatened to ‘starve Palestinian children’

Saeb Erekat pans US warning that it could cut hundreds of millions in aid, calls on American president to 'stop encouraging international anarchy'

By TOI staff and Agencies Today, 4:19 pmUpdated at 11:48 am

A senior Palestinian official on Wednesday said that US President Donald Trump’s threat to slash hundreds of millions of dollars in annual aid would lead to children starving in refugee camps and that the America leader was emboldening Israel to commit crimes against international law.

For years the “Palestinian leadership has engaged in good faith in numerous meetings and encounters with the US administration,” said Saeb Erekat, the longtime senior Palestinian negotiator, after a meeting of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s political committee in Ramallah. [This is simply one more blatant bit of taqiyah from these perverse criminals. They have not been acting in good faith from the onset and it is obvious to anyone who knows any history of the situation. – rdb]

Erekat slammed the American president for being unreasonable with the Palestinians and accused Trump, by his actions, of encouraging “the Israeli occupation to consolidate its occupation and apartheid regime.” “Now, he is threatening to starve Palestinian children in refugee camps and deny their natural rights to health and education if we don’t endorse his terms and dictations,” Erekat said, referring to Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. [Considering the amount of money that has been poured into that rat trap of a group, which has gone out of their way to avoid a solution to the problems and to make an effort to create a reasonable infrastructure and economic situation because of their fraud, this man needs to button his lips and crawl into a sewer somewhere in Ramallah. Had they acted with any responsibility at all they would not be on the dole from the rest of the world. – rdb]

“Instead of treating the Palestinians with fairness, President Trump has chosen a game of blame rather being an honest broker,” Erekat said. “His statements against the Palestinian people have encouraged Israel to continue its heinous crimes and violations of International Law.”

Erekat pointed to what he said were other US moves against the Palestinians, including efforts to close the PLO mission in Washington, and made an  apparent reference to a bill that would cut economic aid to the Palestinian Authority if it continues to pay wages to the families of terrorists who attacked Israelis.

“We call upon President Trump and his administration to stand on the right side of history, to respect international law and to stop encouraging international anarchy and violations of the basic requirements of peace,” added Erekat.

Erekat recently underwent a lung transplant at a Virginia hospital. [If The Donald were to stand on the right side of history he would have banished the “PA” leadership and most of those who have a terrorist history to Iraq or Saudi or Jordan the first day of office. There is literally no real history of a defined “PA” people at all. – rdb]

Tensions between the US and Palestinians reached a breaking point after Trump’s December 6 recognition of the Israeli capital, with the Palestinian leadership declaring that it would no longer accept Washington as a peace broker.

Earlier Wednesday, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s office responded to Trump’s aid threat by saying that Jerusalem is “not for sale.”

“Jerusalem is the eternal capital of the state of Palestine and it is not for sale for gold or billions,” Abbas spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh told AFP. MORE - https://www.timesofisrael.com/top-plo-official-says-trump-plans-to-starve-palestinian-children/

White House: Trump won’t subsidize Palestinians if they spread lies about the US

Official says president won't 'tolerate falsehoods being spread' and 'he certainly will not spend taxpayer dollars to subsidize those who spread them'

By Eric Cortellessa Today, 7:38 pm

WASHINGTON — US President Donald Trump remains dedicated to brokering an Israeli-Palestinian peace accord, but he won’t “tolerate falsehoods being spread about America” and its positions, a senior White House official told The Times of Israel on Wednesday.

The official was responding to the president’s tweet on Tuesday threatening to cut US aid from the Palestinian Authority if it does not enter negotiations with Israel.

“The President is a master dealmaker and is as committed to trying to achieve the ultimate peace deal, as ever, but he will not tolerate falsehoods being spread about America and our positions—and he certainly will not spend taxpayer dollars to subsidize those who spread them,” the official said in an email.

It was not immediately clear what specific “falsehoods” were being referred to and the White House did not immediately respond to a request for clarification. [The reason it is not clear is because the “PA” has produced so many of them. – rdb]

Trump formally recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital last month, triggering an angry reaction from Palestinians and the broader Arab world.

PA President Mahmoud Abbas responded by saying the US could no longer play its traditional role as a mediator in the conflict, and Palestinian officials refused to meet with Trump’s special peace envoy Jason Greenblatt when he visited the region in December. They now say they won’t meet with Vice President Mike Pence, who is due later this month.

Trump had tasked son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner with restarting the effort, and brought his former attorney, Greenblatt, into the White House to lead the negotiations.

Their Mideast peace team had held meetings with Israeli, Palestinian and Arab leaders for nearly a year ahead of an expected peace proposal.

The White House official emphasized on Wednesday that despite recent developments, they still plan on pushing forward with that quest.

“In the meantime, we remain hard at work on our comprehensive peace plan, which will benefit both Israelis and Palestinians and will be unveiled when it is ready and the time is right,” the official said.

However, Trump’s Tuesday night tweet appeared to be a tacit admission that his Jerusalem recognition and decision to move the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem had stalled the plans to renew the peace process.

…peace treaty with Israel. We have taken Jerusalem, the toughest part of the negotiation, off the table, but Israel, for that, would have had to pay more. But with the Palestinians no longer willing to talk peace, why should we make any of these massive future payments to them?

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 2, 2018

He dismissed Palestinian fury over his Jerusalem recognition and said that he planned for Israel “to pay” in future negotiations for his declaration.

But Palestinian unwillingness to enter talks, he said, was preventing any progress. “They don’t even want to negotiate a long overdue peace treaty with Israel,” he said. “We have taken Jerusalem, the toughest part of the negotiation, off the table, but Israel, for that, would have had to pay more.”

“But with the Palestinians no longer willing to talk peace,” he went on, “why should we make any of these massive future payments to them?”

The United States currently gives the PA over $300 million in annual aid. [That is just a start and then you look at how much goes to the UNRWA. – rdb]

President Trump has, in the past, voiced support in principle for legislation that would substantially cut US aid to the PA if it continues its practice of paying the families of terrorists who kill Israelis. The White House has not yet taken a firm position on that bill — called the Taylor Force Act — and said it would monitor the measure as it works its way through Congress.

Earlier on Tuesday, US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, for her part, threatened to cut off funding to the UN’s Palestinian refugee agency, UNRWA, if the Palestinians refused to engage in peace negotiations. https://www.timesofisrael.com/white-house-trump-wont-subsidize-palestinians-if-they-spread-lies-about-the-us/
How much aid does the US give Palestinians, and what’s it for?

Washington has been the largest international donor to the PA since the early 90's with over $5 billion in USAID funds alone -- and that's only half the story

By Dov Lieber Today, 10:03 pm

The United States is by far the largest donor of financial aid to the Palestinians, with this assistance touching nearly every aspect of life in the Palestinian Authority. But US President Donald Trump threatened on Tuesday to end this aid to the Palestinians, angered by Ramallah’s refusal to cooperate with the US’s efforts to jump-start Israeli-Palestinian peace talks after he declared Jerusalem the capital of Israel in December.

The Palestinians want East Jerusalem to be the capital of their future state.

Trump tweeted on Tuesday that Washington was paying the PA hundreds of millions of dollars a year “for nothing,” and complained that the US received “no appreciation or respect” in return.

Earlier on Tuesday, US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley threatened to cut off funding to the UN’s Palestinian refugee agency, UNRWA, if the Palestinians refused to engage in peace negotiations.

Should the threats of the president and Haley come to fruition, what kind of impact could this have on the Palestinians?

Three types of US assistance to the Palestinians

According to the US Consulate in Jerusalem’s website, the United States has been the largest donor of aid to the Palestinians since the signing of the Oslo Accords in 1994. This aid has totaled around $600 million annually in recent years, and can be roughly divided into three categories.

The first is USAID, the conduit by which the State Department provides aid to countries across the world. The second is the economic support for law and order in the Palestinian Authority. These two categories were perhaps the aid that Trump had in mind in his tweet, though the president did not specify. The third is the US support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, or UNRWA, as addressed by Haley. PA to resume full payments for Gaza electricity amid reconciliation bid

Abbas had cut supply to pressure Hamas; restoration will see the enclave return to its regular program of 6-8 hours of electricity daily

By Dov Lieber Today, 4:49 pm

The Palestinian Authority said on Wednesday that it is ready to resume paying for all of its share of  electricity for the Gaza Strip, ending more than six months of restrictions for the already power-starved Strip.

The measure comes amid a Palestinian reconciliation process between the PA and the Hamas terror group that has ruled the Strip for the last 10 years, and was one of the key demands by Hamas.

Abbas had dramatically reduced payments to Israel for the electricity — effectively slashing the supply — in a bid to pressure Hamas to loosen its grip on Gaza.

The PA has now requested that Israel now resume supplying another 50 megawatts to Gaza’s power lines, restoring the provision of electricity to Gaza to what it was prior to June 2017, said Civil Affairs Minister Hussein al-Sheikh in a statement to the official PA news site Wafa.

The return of the regular power supply to the Strip would mean Gazans would again see six to eight hours of electricity a day, rather than two to four hours a day they received during the reduction. Some days during the electricity crisis some Gazans received more than four hours of electricity a day, thanks to supplies of fuel sent from Egyptian.

The extra shortages in electricity severely hampered essential services in Gaza such as water treatment and healthcare.

Until June, the PA had been paying NIS 40 million ($11.1 million) a month for 125 megawatts of electricity for Gaza. In June, the PA cut its electricity payments for Gaza to Israel by 35%, which led Israel to slowly reduce the number of megawatts it supplied the Strip from 125 to 75.

An Egyptian-brokered agreement in early October originally set a December 1 deadline for the terror group to fully transfer power in the Gaza Strip back to the Palestinian Authority, which is dominated by PA Abbas’s Fatah party, though that was later pushed back to December 10, but that deadline passed too.

Hamas has demanded Abbas lift all sanctions he placed on the Strip as part of reconciliation measures. The sanctions also included deep cuts to the salaries of thousands of government employees in Gaza, as well as cuts in medical aid.

PA Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah said in televised statements that the electricity was being restored as part of the reconciliation process.

In recent weeks, the PA has begun to restore its medical aid to the Strip as well. [Interesting that the “PA” is howling about US funding and hurting people because of their withholding funds but what about their actions to their own people in Gaza by withholding medical aid? – rdb]

Despite the slow lifting of sanctions on the Strip by Abbas, both Fatah and Hamas continued to say the reconciliation process was close to failure, largely over the issue of what will happen to Hamas’s military wing.

“Whoever doesn’t see that reconciliation is collapsing is blind,” said Hamas Gaza chief Yahya Sinwar in December. “Some people want reconciliation on Israeli and American terms, which means handing over weapons and the tunnel and rocket capabilities,” Sinwar added.

Hamas claimed in December that it had handed over control of all government ministries, but Fatah’s top negotiator Azzam al-Ahmad later said “obstacles” remained.

Since the start of this reconciliation process between rival Palestinian factions — several others have failed in the past — the question over the fate of Hamas’s 25,000-strong military wing has been a thorny issue between the sides.

Abbas wants the PA to be in full control of all weapons and security in the Gaza Strip, but Hamas is refusing to give up its arsenal. Hamas, which seeks the destruction of Israel, has fought three wars with Israel since seizing power from Fatah in the enclave in 2007. https://www.timesofisrael.com/pa-to-resume-full-payments-for-gaza-electricity-amid-reconciliation-bid/ [It will be interesting to see from where the funds for the electricity will come if the US cuts of much of our aid to these vile critters. Actually having had multiple experiences in Israel and seeing the inculcation of the people and their youth with virulent Jewish hatred, you have to begin to think that your choice is to starve them as children or let them grow up and be terrorists and kill themselves as they try to kill Jews? Amid shifting regional alliances, will Jordan open up to Iran?

Osama Al Sharif January 2, 2018

As Jordanians bade farewell to an exceptionally bad year for the kingdom in terms of worsening economic and social conditions, forecasts for 2018 were noticeably not optimistic. Parliament is expected to pass a controversial state budget that will approve an International Monetary Fund (IMF) mandated suspension of subsidies that will include bread — an essential daily staple for millions of Jordanians. In addition, a draft income tax law will limit exemptions for paying income tax and lower the threshold for those who will have to pay the tax. Economic growth remains sluggish and the state budget continues to suffer from deficits, while foreign and local debt has passed the $36 billion mark. Economists have warned that foreign aid to the kingdom might also decrease in 2018.

But the gloomy economic picture is only part of the current state of pessimism. Pundits have pointed to major geopolitical shifts in the region during 2017 that put additional pressure on the kingdom. They included worsening relations with Israel, a perception that traditional Gulf allies are negotiating secretly with Israel to pass President Donald Trump’s so-called “ultimate deal” at the expense of both Jordan and the Palestinians, and most recently the fallout from Trump’s unilateral recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Despite tough warnings from the United States, Jordan — which has led an intensive diplomatic campaign to counterbalance Trump’s proclamation — voted in favor of the UN General Assembly resolution Dec. 21, which described any change to the status of Jerusalem as null and void and was seen as a rebuke to the White House. Still, Jordanians worry that the United States might retaliate by slashing an estimated $1.2 billion in annual economic and military aid. Worse still, they fear that the historically firm alliance with the United States might suffer under the current administration.

King Abdullah had hoped to build a strong relationship with Trump. He was the only Arab leader to meet him three times last year. The king is a familiar visitor to Capitol Hill and enjoys excellent ties with key lawmakers. As such, it will be difficult for the Trump administration to take punitive measures against Amman without facing objections from Congress. Putin's Titanic has hit a fatal Middle East iceberg

Putin tried to sail the Middle East waters without an economic or political compass. The crash is fast approaching.

Mark Langfan, 03/01/18 09:05

In 1912, imagine buying a super-expensive ticket on the unsinkable Titanic only to find out halfway across the Atlantic Ocean that not only is the Titanic sinking, but you are going to die drowning in the frigid waters.

It’s 2018 and that’s exactly how Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Foreign Minister Lavrov are feeling at this exact moment about their buy into Iranian debt and Iranian “hegemony.”  Iran’s genocidal Islamo-Fascist Regime is slowing or at the least, going up in flames.  The problem for Putin is that Putin has put all his Middle East eggs in the Shiite Ayatollah’s basket, and that basket has just crashed to the ground.

Let’s talk cash.  Putin has sold Iran and Syria weapons on credit, essentially based on the assumption of Iran’s solvency. Putin doesn’t have any money to begin with, so Putin has to borrow money and put the sovereign Russian accounts in debt to pay for the weapons he sells to Iran and Syria in return for Iranian and Syrian debt.  Not a  wise move.

As an example, soon after the Iran/Obama Nuke deal was signed, sealed and delivered by the US Congress in September 2015, RIA Novosti reported that the Russian sovereign government itself loaned Iran $5 billion, and the Russian infrastructure bank VEB loaned Iran another $2 Billion for a total of $7-8 Billion dollars.  Those numbers don’t even include the weapons and nuclear power plants Russia has “sold” to Syria and Iran on credit.  How do you say, “Iran is totally bankrupt and its IOUs are worthless” in Russian?

Next, Putin’s Russian weapons have co-partnered in the Iranian genocide of a half-million Sunni Arabs in Syria.  But, Putin has just realized that neither he nor Iran has the money to cement any form of an Assad Syrian post-war Pro-Russian regime.  As an Apollo 13 astronaut would have said in the situation, “Moscow, we have a problem.”  Iran blew through the 150 Billion dollars Obama gave them faster than a katyusha rocket.

Then, of course, Russia is now trying to shore up its Iranian tyrant friends by telling the United States “not to meddle.”  See this:  It’s ok for Russian jets to mass-murder Syrian opposition forces, but President Trump can’t tweet a little positive feedback to hundreds of thousands of Iranians who are sick and tired of their fanatical religious leaders who buy Russian death-machines instead of investing in Iran’s youth.  In Putin’s Orwellian world, Russian mass-murder of Syrians is not “meddling,” but President Trump’s tweeting to Iranian citizens is “meddling.”

And it gets even better.  Close to 20% of Russia is made up of vast territories comprised of Sunni Muslims.  The current Iranian revolution is lighting the fire under all those Sunni Muslims and encouraging them  to revolt against Putin - just as the Iranians are revolting against their brutal tyrannical ayatollahs.  The Sunni Russians would love to execute their own #MeToo campaign against Putin.

If Ayatollah Khamenei’s Regime is overthrown, Putin and Foreign Minister Lavrov will face an internal Islamic threat 50 times worse than that which NATO poses.  Add to this mix the fact that Russia’s Sunnis are upset that Putin backed the Shiite Iran genocide against the Syrian Sunnis so as to further enslave Sunni Islam.  Putin is sitting on a ticking internal Sunni Islamic nuclear bomb of his own making.

Putin may have thought he backed the Middle East “Strong Horse” in backing Iran.  But, with Iran’s streets in flames, it’s looking like Putin backed a paper tiger that  is about to go up in flames while turning his country into an economic cripple. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/Articles/Article.aspx/21502 [This is a most interesting analysis piece that may help explain some of the Pootie Poot’s recalcitrance concerning the US’s dealing with Iran. It tes many of these recent events into a nice little package that makes a lot of sense. – rdb]

More pro-regime rallies as Iran declares ‘sedition’ over

Government supporters take to the streets following a week of unrest that saw 21 people killed

By Eric RANDOLPH Today, 12:25 pm

TEHRAN, Iran (AFP) — Iran saw another day of large pro-regime rallies Thursday after authorities declared the end of deadly unrest and turned attention to addressing economic concerns that fueled protests.

A week after the demonstrations broke out, there were no reports of fresh protests in local media overnight, while videos on social media suggested only limited unrest in provincial towns which could not be immediately verified.

As Washington suggested it may be looking to impose fresh sanctions on Tehran, Iranian authorities were weighing options including blocking unpopular measures in President Hassan Rouhani’s recent budget.

State television showed huge crowds marching in support of the government across 10 cities early Thursday, including Isfahan, Ardebil and Mashhad, where the protests first erupted last Thursday.

“We are together behind the leader,” chanted the crowds, in reference to supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

“The revolutionary Iranian people have responded in time to the enemies and trouble-makers by coming out on the streets,” Ali Akbar Velayati, an advisor to Khamenei, told the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“The people’s main demand now is for the government and officials to deal with the economic problems,” he added.

General Mohammad Ali Jafari, the head of Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guards, on Wednesday announced the “end of the sedition.”

A total of 21 people died in five days of unrest that began on December 28 as protests against economic grievances quickly turned against the regime as a whole, with attacks on government buildings and police stations.

Jafari told state television that “a large number of the troublemakers” were behind the unrest, saying many had been arrested and would face “firm action.”

Grotesque intervention’

The unrest — the biggest challenge to Iran’s Islamic regime since mass protests in 2009 — caused international concern, with the United States in particular accusing authorities of a crackdown on dissent.

A White House official, who asked for anonymity, said Wednesday that Washington would look for “actionable information” to try to bring fresh sanctions on those responsible.

US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly tweeted his backing for Iranian protesters, wrote: “You will see great support from the United States at the appropriate time!”

The question now is whether Trump will continue to waive nuclear-related sanctions that were suspended under the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers. MORE - https://www.timesofisrael.com/more-pro-regime-rallies-as-iran-declares-sedition-over/

Mount St. Helens Is Rumbling Again With 40 Earthquakes Since New Years Day

Trevor Nace , Contributor Jan 3, 2018 @ 11:22 AM 34,638

Since New Years Day Mount St. Helens has experienced 40 earthquakes within its vicinity as tremors continue every few hours. The most powerful earthquake was a magnitude 3.9 that occurred around midnight west coast time about 5 miles from Mount St. Helens and 23 miles from the town of Morton.

The 3.9 magnitude earthquake was felt in Portland but there were no reported injuries or damage. Since that earthquake there have been 16 more earthquakes, averaging about every half hour with magnitudes from 0.6 to 2.6.

It is common to experience swarms of earthquakes at Mount St. Helens. While it is certainly not a sign of an impending eruption, the earthquakes are a result of an active volcanic system.

Mount St. Helens is most commonly known for its major eruption in 1980, the deadliest and most economically damaging volcanic event in the history of the United States. The stratovolcano is situated just 96 miles from Seattle and 50 miles from Portland, making an eruption especially dangerous. Chelsea Clinton Wishes The Church Of Satan A Happy New Year

Dave Brooks Associate Editor 12:21 AM 01/03/2018

Chelsea Clinton gave a warm holiday greeting to an unusual group when she wished The Church of Satan a “Happy New Year” in a tweet Tuesday.

Clinton found herself in a Twitter conversation with The Church of Satan, model Chrissy Teigen, the restaurant Hooters and various assorted accounts after she tweeted encouragement to Teigen.

The popular model and best-selling cookbook author had tweeted her frustration Saturday over a verified Twitter account that used pictures of Teigen’s daughter in costumes to make wild accusations of pedophilia. White House dismisses 'trashy tabloid fiction' after torching Bannon

Published: 7 hours ago Art Moore

A friend and adviser of Donald Trump quoted in a controversial upcoming exposé of the White House calling the president “stupid” says the author put words in his mouth, casting doubt on other sensational claims that rocked the administration Wednesday, including that Trump didn’t want to win the election.

Thomas J. Barrack told the New York Times the quote attributed to him by Michael Wolff in “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House” is “totally false.”

Wolff quoted Barrack telling a friend that the president is “not only crazy, he’s stupid.”

But Barrack commented Wednesday: “It’s clear to anyone who knows me that those aren’t my words and inconsistent with anything I’ve ever said.”

Barrack told the Times that Wolff never vetted the quotation with him for accuracy.

Critics of Wolff noted that in a review of his 1997 book “Burn Rate,” the now defunct media-watchdog magazine Brill’s Content accused Wolff of “apparent factual errors” and said that more than a dozen of the subjects he mentioned in the book complained that Wolff had “invented or changed quotes.” MORE - http://www.wnd.com/2018/01/trump-erupts-on-steve-bannon-hes-lost-his-mind/ [It would appear that The Donald’s comments about Bannon are pretty much on target. Cut in US aid to Pakistan imminent, say congressional aides

By REUTERS January 4, 2018 11:48

US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said on Tuesday that Washington would withhold $255 million in assistance to Pakistan.

WASHINGTON - US President Donald Trump's administration has been informing members of Congress that it will announce as soon as Wednesday plans to cut off "security assistance" to Pakistan, congressional aides said on Wednesday, a day after the White House warned Islamabad it would have to do more to maintain US aid.

Aides in two congressional offices said the State Department called on Wednesday to inform them that it would announce on Wednesday or Thursday that aid was being cut off, although it was not clear how much, what type or for how long.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders declined to say whether an announcement was imminent. The State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The calls to Capitol Hill came a day after Washington accused Pakistan of playing a "double game" on fighting terrorism and warned Islamabad it would have to do more if it wanted to maintain US aid.
US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said on Tuesday that Washington would withhold $255 million in assistance to Pakistan. Her statement followed an angry tweet from Trump on Monday that the United States had been rewarded with "nothing but lies and deceit" for giving Pakistan billions in aid.
Pakistan civilian and military chiefs rejected what they termed "incomprehensible" US comments and summoned US Ambassador David Hale to explain Trump's tweet.
Relations between Islamabad and Washington have been strained for years over Islamabad's alleged support for Haqqani network militants, who are allied with the Afghan Taliban.
The United States also alleges that senior Afghan Taliban commanders live on Pakistani soil and has signaled it will cut aid and take other steps if Islamabad does not stop helping or turning a blind eye to Haqqani militants crossing the border to carry out attacks in Afghanistan.
Many members of the US Congress, particularly Republicans, who control both houses of the legislature, have been critical of the Pakistani government and called for cuts in military and other aid. http://www.jpost.com/International/Islamic-Terrorism/Cut-in-US-aid-to-Pakistan-imminent-say-congressional-aides-532810 [Pakistan has been playing a game with the US and like many of the Islamic controlled countries sucking up money under false pretenses for years. Commentaries:

The Iranian explosion of truth

By Caroline B. Glick Published Jan. 3, 2018

If the Iranian regime is unable to brutally stomp out the countrywide protests raging through the country, and if the protesters achieve their goal of bringing down the regime, they will go down in history as the saviors of millions of people not just in Iran but throughout the world.

Given the earth shattering potential of the protests it is extraordinary to see the liberal media in the US and Europe struggle to downplay their significance.
Aside from a lukewarm statement on Twitter from British Foreign Minister Boris Johnson, as of Monday morning – five days into the protests – no senior European official had spoken in favor of the hundreds of thousands of Iranians marching throughout their country demanding freedom.
In the US, former members of the Obama administration and the liberal media have determinedly downplayed the importance of the protests. They have insisted that President Donald Trump should stop openly supporting the protesters and so adopt former president Barack Obama’s policy of effectively siding with the Iranian regime against the Iranian people who seek its overthrow.
These talking points have been pushed out into the media echo chamber by Obama’s former deputy national security adviser and strategic communications chief Ben Rhodes, his former national security adviser Susan Rice and former secretary of state John Kerry.
Obama’s Middle East coordinator Philip Gordon stated them outright in an op-ed in The New York Times on Saturday. Gordon called on Trump “to keep quiet and do nothing” in response to the protests.
In Gordon’s view, no matter how big their beef with the regime, the protesters hate the US more. And they really hate Trump.
Gordon wrote, “Whatever Iranians think of their own government, they are unlikely to want as a voice for their grievances an American president who has relentlessly opposed economic relief for their country and banned them from traveling to the United States.”
Just as Obama’s surrogates have repeated Gordon’s claims, so the Obama-supporting liberal media have gone out of their way to diminish the importance of the protests in their coverage of them and use Obama’s surrogates as their “expert” analysts to explain what is happening (or rather, distort what is happening) to their audiences.
Obama administration officials have been so outspoken in their defense of the Iranian regime because they rightly view the prospect that the protesters will succeed in overthrowing the regime as a mortal threat to their legacy.

Obama’s foreign policy rested on the assumption that the US was a colonialist, aggressive and immoral superpower. By their telling, the Iranians – like the Cubans and the Russians – were right to oppose the US due to its legacy of meddling in the internal affairs of other countries. This anti-American worldview informed the Obama administration’s conviction that it was incumbent on the US to make amends for its previous decades of foreign policy.

Hence, Obama traveled the globe in 2009 and 2010 apologizing for the policies of his predecessors. Hence, Obama believed that the US had no moral right to stand with the Iranian people against the regime in the 2009 Green Revolution. As he saw it, anyone who stood with the US was no better than an Uncle Tom. Truly authentic foreign regimes were be definition anti-American. Since the Green Revolutionaries were begging for his support, by definition, they didn’t deserve it.
Since the current wave on anti-regime protests began last Thursday, the liberal media have parroted the Obama alumni’s talking points because they feel that their war against Trump requires them to embrace Obama’s legacy just as they embraced his talking points and policies for eight years.
After all, if Obama is not entirely infallible, then Trump cannot be entirely fallible. And if Trump may be partially right and Obama partially wrong, then their dispute may be a substantive rather than existential one. And so, the New York Times’ coverage of the most significant story in the world has deliberately distorted and downplayed events on the ground in Iran.
The protests are potentially so important because the Iranian regime is so dangerous. Thanks to Obama, the regime is on a glide path to a nuclear arsenal. Its proxy armies in Lebanon, Syria, Yemen and Iraq possess sophisticated armaments most militaries can only dream of. Its tentacles spread throughout the globe.
The longer the Iranian regime remains in power, the greater the likelihood humanity will soon face a global conflagration that will dwarf World War II.
Nothing any single state does against Iran’s proxies will end Iran’s continued ability to cause mayhem and death on multiple fronts. Every day the Iranian regime remains in place, it will use its power to continue its direct and indirect wars against its enemies in the Middle East and throughout the world.
Gordon argued that Trump’s pro-Israel and pro-Saudi policies since taking office have made him less credible with the Iranian people. All you have to do to understand that this is nonsense is listen to what the protesters are chanting. They insist that they want their country’s money spent at home, on them. They do not want their money used to underwrite Hezbollah, the Assad regime in Syria and Hamas’s regime in Gaza. In other words, they don’t want to make war with Israel – or, presumably Saudi Arabia.
Their criticism is on point.

In 2016, flush with cash from Obama’s nuclear deal, Iran quadrupled its support of Hezbollah from $200 million to $800m. per year.

In 2012 Iran cut off its funding to Hamas in retaliation for Hamas’s support for the Muslim Brotherhood against Iran’s Syrian proxy President Bashar Assad. In the wake of Obama’s nuclear deal, Iran became Hamas’s largest financier.
Last August, Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar said that Iran is Hamas’s “largest backer financially and militarily.”
The $100 billion in sanctions relief Iran received in the wake of the nuclear deal enabled the regime to give hundreds of millions of additional dollars each year to its proxy militias and armies in Iraq, Yemen and Syria.
It is self-evident that if the protesters get their way and the ayatollahs are overthrown, that money would stop flowing to Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis and the Shi’ite militias in Iraq. Instead, that money, and billions more, would be spent developing Iran.
There are many ways that the nations of the world can help the protesters in Iran. The US and Iran’s other targets can expose the financial corruption in the Islamic Republic, including the bank account information of everyone from Supreme Dictator Ayatollah Ali Khamenei down to local Basij commanders. They can broadcast anti-regime information into Iran through multiple platforms outside the regime’s control. They can bypass the regime and unblock Twitter, Facebook, Telegraph and other social media platforms.
Aside from that, the Trump administration can take immediate steps to constrain even further the regime’s access to the international monetary system and force European and US firms to cancel their multi-billion dollar deals with the regime.
There are many reasons to fear that the protests will fail to achieve their goal of overthrowing the regime. The regime is already sending its forces out to repress the protesters through killing and mass arrests.
But even if the protesters’ prospects of success are small, there is no excuse for not supporting them, as constructively, enthusiastically and unconditionally as possible. There is certainly no excuse for working to preserve Obama’s foreign policy legacy at the expense of a popular uprising that has the potential to avert a world war. http://www.jewishworldreview.com/0118/glick010318.php3
