6.5 Respiratory Protection Dust respirators will be worn where excessive airborne particles are present. They should be worn
especially when handling dry chemicals, lime, soda ash, filter clays, cement and sand etc. The
respirator and filter will be kept in good order and checked before use.
NOTE: The respirator is for use only as a dust filter and will not be used as protection against smoke,
gas, fumes or any condition of oxygen deficiency.
Breathing Apparatus (BA) will be provided for use in confined spaces which may contain vapours or
gaseous mixtures, or areas where the atmospheric oxygen content is below recommended levels. For
more information on BA equipment, see doc. no. SA-SWZZZZ-HS-PRO-0710 Confined Space Entry
(CSE) Procedure.
6.6 Hand / Foot Protection Gloves suitable for the type of work to be carried out will be worn where a possibility of hand injuries
exists from handling of corrosive or poisonous substances, cuts or abrasions or from heat or electric
shock.
NOTE: Gloves must not be used when working on radial drilling machines
General glove types and uses are as follows:
Regular heavy fabric to minimise abrasions and scratches and also offer some protection against
thermal burns.
Chrome leathers or leather palmed gloves, when working with hot equipment where regular gloves
are inadequate.
Plastic impervious gloves must be used when handling corrosive or irritant chemicals or materials
that are poisonous by absorption through the skin.
Gauntlet gloves may be worn when additional protection of the forearm is required (e.g. welding
work). It should be noted however that gloves with long gauntlets must not be worn if there is a
likelihood of them being caught in moving machinery.
