--------------------------------------------------

Birth: 7 Dec 1913, Brooklyn NY

Death: 4 Oct 2013, Toronto, Canada

Marriage: 22 Dec 1933.
Shirley was very active in her community, holding a number of positions including those of president of her Hadassah Chapter and of the Toronto Northview Chapter of B’Nai Brith Women of Canada.
She played basketball in the 1930s, explaining that they followed girls’ rules in school, but played by the boys’ rules outside of school. She sang in the choir, and at almost age 98 sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and “In Other Words, I Love You” for a visitor. Shirley loved to travel, said, “I tried not to stay home.” She traveled extensively, to England 25 times, Australia five times, Barbados more than 50 times, and to South America. At one time she drove her mother to Albany to meet “the other Helen Sutin.” She was incredibly independent and even in her late 80s traveled all over the world and drove all over North America.
She had serious health problems in her early 90s, and against doctors’ predictions made an incredible recovery. Her daughters supported her determination to return to her own home, against medical advice. For a little while she had round-the-clock nursing care, and when she improved the nurses went and two live-in companions moved in. Thus she remained in her home of almost 70 years, surrounded by all that was familiar, including a plethora of family photos, until her death at almost 100.
Neither her illness nor her advancing age robbed her of her sense of humor, her feistiness, or her penchant for arguing strongly with family members when she believed them to be wrong. Some physical limitations may have slowed her activity level, but certainly not her mind. At almost age 98 she welcomed visitors into her home with warmth, graciousness, and excellent conversation.

They got it fixed, went on to Buffalo which Shirley described as a boring place--”nothing to do there”. Jack did not share Shirley’s love of travel, traveled only for business.

--------------------------------------------------

Birth: 18 Nov 1912, Washington DC

Death: 27 Apr 1979, Potomac MD

Education: George Washington University, Georgetown University Dental School

Marriage: 12 Jul 1937, Manhattan (secretly); 15 April 1938
Sheldon was raised in Toronto after his father moved the family there so that he could open a dental laboratory. While Sheldon was studying for his undergraduate degree his father, to whom he had been extremely close, died. Sheldon wanted to be an engineer, not a dentist (he didn’t really care for people, according to his daughter), but Jews weren’t hired for engineering positions at that time.
Before setting up a practice he did an internship at Goldwater Hospital in New York. He loved to ride in the ambulances and decide what to do with jaw and mouth injuries. There he met Rose, a dental hygienist. Before he left for Washington DC to open his practice, they were secretly married by a justice of the peace at the courthouse. His daughter claims, “Dad was a smart man, making certain she would not marry someone else until he could send for her. She was truly a catch and he was the luckiest man in the world to find her.”
Sheldon’s first practice was in the Brookland section of Washington and his second one was on 16th Street, NW. Although his daughter “… never saw affection between Grandma Helen and Dad, as the Jewish religion states you must keep one safe and provide what is needed. He did that as each dental office had living quarters for her.” Sheldon, already secretly married to Rose, told his mother that he wanted to marry her. Helen arranged to have them married by a rabbi on 15 April 1938. Helen never knew they had married earlier in New York. They celebrated the 1938 date until Helen passed away and then they began celebrating July 12 as their anniversary.
Sheldon and Rose lived in an apartment on 9th Street in Washington, DC when their two children were born. The family moved into a house in Chevy Chase Maryland in 1945, where they remained for several decades. Before purchasing the home, Sheldon asked the neighbors if it was okay for a Jew to move into the area. Daughter Nancy recalls, “We had good times while growing up and some not so great. Dad was smart but not easy. Mom was a rock, kind, capable, loving with a sense of humor. Unlike today, where children are unafraid of either parent, we were afraid of Dad. I remember one time when my brother and I were in the basement watching TV, Dad yelled at us to come upstairs. Mike looked at me and said what did you do, I looked at Mike and said what did you do? We both answered nothing. We raced to the top of the stairs and Dad looked at us and laughed and said do you want to go to the movies. Dad mellowed as he got older.
“One time Mike and I were outside and Dad shot us with a hose. I had just learned to make water bombs and I convinced Mike to come with me to make one and we threw it at Dad. He laughed his head off. Another time we were visiting Al Sutin in Toronto. Dad said, ‘Watch this.’ Mike was off talking to someone and Dad told me hit Mike a few times. I did and all Mike did was block my shots, never hitting back. Dad wanted to show how good Mike, 2½ years older, was to me.”
Sheldon and Rose sold their house and wanted see the United States, so they bought a motor home and traveled. They loved it. Between trips they lived with Nancy and her family. Sheldon’s diabetes led to an amputation but they traveled on. Rose lived with Nancy and family until she died in Nancy’s arms “… after I told her it was OK to go she took one breath and passed away. She was like that. She wouldn’t die until I said it was OK.”
After Sheldon died, Nancy says, she learned things about him she never knew. One of his closest friends was a dentist who developed tuberculosis. After Sheldon finished work he would go to the friend’s office and work on his patients so his friend would have a practice to go to when he was well. Sheldon picked up and delivered shoes to a shoe store when there was no way for them to get supplies. He never told Mike and Nancy about the great things he did. He was very gifted; both his head and his hands worked. He could do anything and he did, repairing cars, washers, and televisions, assembling Heath Kits.
Spouse: Rose Zam6,611,364,614,29,106,108

Birth: 5 Apr 1912

Death: Jan 1984, Potomac MD
Rose and Sheldon met at an island off of New York, while Sheldon was doing his dental residency and Rose was a dental hygienist. Rosie, as she was known to many, was extremely well liked by her children’s friends, could be relied on to help with whatever problems they had, or thought they had. She was a warm, kind woman who reached out to others.

--------------------------------------------------

Birth: 3 Sep 1941

Education: Michigan State University

Marriage: 14 May 1965

As a young child Mike once got mad at his parents and told them he was going to run away. He packed a suitcase and left the apartment as his parents watched. He circled the block and came back. What happened, they asked? He told them he was not allowed to cross the street. Problem solved.
Mike was voted the most athletic student in his Bethesda-Chevy Chase high school class of over 600 students. After earning his baccalaureate degree, he was to enter the Marines. However, his father had a patient who was a baseball player, told Mike if he applied for a National Security Agency job he could work there and play ball for them, which he did. While providing employees with computer instruction he met Pat, a code breaker and student in his class. Over the years Mike worked for several computing and consulting firms in a variety of states, including Hawaii, and for the Boston and Maine Railroad for nine years. He also has worked for Home Depot and AAA.
When Mike’s mother, Rose, met Pat for the first time she asked her how long she had been in town. Pat said only a few months. Rose said don’t worry, give it time and you will find a nice young man, never suggesting that her son might be that young man.
