Mineralogical - Geochemical Investigation of the Quartzite and Quartz – Rich Sand Deposits in the West of Çatalca (İstanbul)

The study area is located in the west-northwest of Çatalca (İstanbul). This area comprise of approximately 70 km2 of Yalıköy and its surroundings. The oldest unit in the study area is Permo-Triassic age Şermat Quartzite of the Strandja Massif. This unit is overlain unconformably by the Triassic age Mahya schist. The Strandja Massif is overlain by the unconformity by the Eocene age the limestone and the Neogene age Ergene Formation that the units surfaces unconformity defined between them.

This study investigates geochemistry of the Permo-Triassic age quartzites and the Neogene age quartz sands as a probable source of glass raw material.

On the petrographic investigations of samples, large quartz crystals have been observed in quartzites. In terms of glass industry large quartz crystals or particles are required as a property.

At geochemical investigations of Rb, Ba, K, Nb, Sr etc. elements in the Şermat quartzite and quartz sands of the Ergene Formation that is used in glass ındustry have been determined to have lower values with respect to the composition of the upper crust.

Also in the light of the geochemical and mineralogical findings, a model for the formation of the basin was produced. In the basin model quartz sands in the area has an age of Miocene-Pliocene and are derived from structurally controlled the quartzite rock located at the edges of the basin.

When compare SiO2 % values of quartzite and quartz sands with % Al2O3, % Fe2O3, % MgO, % CaO, % K2O, % TiO2 values, it lower value of SiO2 % but higher values of feldspar, iron and titan content have been determined in the quartz sands. This property is unwanted in terms of glass industry.

When the compare mineral content of enriched samples with primary samples by XRD, there is no difference.
