Enhanced scientific knowledge supporting the protection and sustainable development of Australia’s marine resources
AIMS’s outcome is derived from the official functions of the Institute (Australian Institute of Marine Science Act 1972, section 9). This output relates directly to the AIMS “Strategic Directions” document and the “Australian Institute of Marine Science Research Plan 2000-2003”.
The Government recognises the importance of research to national prosperity and has noted the increasing importance of marine science for management and use of Australia’s marine resources (A Vision for Excellence, September 1998). AIMS has a record of achievement in marine R&D. Its research program is highly relevant to Government policy.
AIMS is seeking to generate knowledge (products and services) to support the sustainable use and protection of Australia’s diverse and valuable marine environment through innovative, world-class scientific and technological research. In pursuit of this objective, AIMS works closely with industry, managers and regulators to ensure the ecologically sustainable development of major marine industries (e.g. offshore oil and gas, tourism, fisheries) and to promote new industries based upon marine resources
