IPICS ETH:02 - Bioactive Metabolites for Improving Life (BaSIL)
The support started in 2013. The group leader is an alumnus from Sida’s bilateral program with Addis Ababa University, and she has graduated from Uppsala University in 2012.
Objectives

One of the objectives of BaSIL, is to conduct a wide, long-span research on plants that are used in the Ethiopian traditional medicine. The strategies to undertake this activity include, collection of ethnobotanical data (by travelling to societies with limited access to conventional medicine so they have to rely almost entirely on traditional medicine for their primary health care and also by closely working with traditional healers), collection of plants with high ‘hit factor’, phytochemical analysis and biological studies on those plants.

The other research activity of BaSIL focuses on isolation and characterization of bioactive peptides, with particular interest in their cytotoxic and anti-protozoal activities. The strategies include plant collection and laboratory experiments. The field collection of plant specimens shall cover a wide area within the country over a range of time. Most laboratory experiments are to be carried out in our lab; experiments that exceed the material capacity of our lab may be carried out at our collaborators' laboratories.
