IPICS KEN:02 - Natural products research for the management of tropical neglected diseases
Supported since 2011. Final year of support is planned to be 2020.
Objectives
The overall goal of the project is to source secondary metabolites and extracts of Kenyan medicinal plants and determine their potential against neglected tropical diseases with anti-plasmodial activity and malaria as the tropical disease with most focus. This will be done by isolating compounds that are active against tropical diseases as determined by in vitro bioassay tests and then very active compounds will be tested in vivo. Their toxicological characteristics will also be determined. The active compounds will be subjected to structure activity relationship studies to optimize their activity structurally. The prototype compounds will then be formulated into drugs in collaboration with pharmacists at the University of Nairobi.
