Starting letters
Divide the class into teams. Write a word on the board,
e.g.,
flute
. Students have to think
of an English word that
begins with each letter in the word, e.g.,
fantastic, loud,
under, trombone, easy
. The first team to think of all their
words raises their hands,
reads them aloud, and spells
them. They get a point for each word that other teams or
groups haven’t written down.
Ten lives
Choose a word from a target vocabulary set, e.g.,
dumplings
. Write nine letter blanks on the board (one
for each letter in
dumplings
).
Students guess the word by
calling out letters. If they call out a correct letter, e.g.,
p
,
say
Yes
and write
p
in the fourth letter blank. If they call
out an incorrect letter, say
No
,
and students lose a life
(mark this on the board as a strike). Students have to try to
guess the word before they lose all their lives.
Test the teacher
Students test your knowledge by asking you questions.
The questions can be about themselves, comprehension
questions
about a text, or general knowledge questions.
If you know the answer, you get a point. If you don’t know
the answer, they get a point.
The last word
Make sentences using the target vocabulary from the unit
or say lines from the story, but stop before you say the last
word each time. Students say the word.
True or false?
Make a variety of true and false
statements about a picture,
a text, students in the class, or world information that your
students will know. Students listen and say
True
or
False
.
Two minutes
Write a category heading for words you want to
brainstorm on the board. Divide
the class into teams of
five or six. Tell them to think of as many English words in
the category as they can. Each team chooses someone to
write for them. Set a time limit of two minutes (use a timer
if you have one or say
Stop writing!
after two minutes).
Ask students to count how many items are on their list.
Elicit the words from the team
with the fewest items and
write them on the board (or invite the student with the list
to write them). The other teams cross off the ones they
have on their lists. Elicit extra items from the other teams
to see which team has the most words.
