What’s behind my back? 
Without students seeing, put a word card behind your 
back and ask 
What’s behind my back?
Students guess by 
asking different questions, not just
 Is it ... ?
What’s missing? 
Attach word cards to the board. Allow students a few
minutes to look at them. Then ask students to close 
their eyes while you remove one or two of the cards. 
Students then open their eyes and answer the question 
What’s missing? 
Whisper down the line
Make four teams, lined up facing the board. Give the 
student at the front of each team a marker. Whisper a 
different number or word to each of the students at the 
front of the lines. Students whisper it back along the 
line and the student at the back of their team comes, 
and writes it on the board. Teams get a point for writing 
the number (in figures) or the word correctly. The four 
students at the front go to the back of the line. Repeat 
with different numbers or words.
Who said it?
Read aloud lines from the story for students to call out 
the name of the character who said it, e.g., 
What’s the 
surprise? (Jack.)
Alternatively, write the lines on the board 
and number them. Students write the number and the 
character names and they then compare in pairs.
Word race
Stick a set of word cards on the board and give students 
a time limit of five minutes to look at them and practice 
spelling, e.g., by writing them out or testing each other. 
Divide the class into teams (with no more students on 
each team than there are words on the board). Remove 
the words from the board. Divide the board with vertical 
lines so that each team has a section. Students line up 
in their teams, facing the board. Give the first person on 
each team a marker. Say 
Write the words!
These students 
come to the front and write one of the words on their 
team’s section. Then they pass the marker to the next 
person on the team, who writes a different word from the 
list, and so on. Students should not copy other teams, but 
they can help the members of their own team as long as 
they do so in English. Make sure a different student writes 
each word. The team that finishes first, with all the words 
spelled correctly, wins.
