1) Kaiser Karl sass einst zu Aachen mit seinen Palatinen zu Tisch, und als diese mit stolzem Behagen die Pracht der kaiserlichen Tafelgeräte rühmten, meinte er: "Das beste Kleinod dieserWelt, das fehlet uns noch immer". Dieses Kleinod,"hell wie Sonnenschein", trage ein ungeschlachter Riese als Schildzierat,"tief im Ardenner Walde" Da die tapfersten der Recken dies vernahmen, riefen sie nach Ross und Rüstung und machten sich unverzüglich auf, "zu reiten nach dem Riesen".
2) Auch Milon von Anglant, des Kaisers Schwager, schloss sich ihnen an und als er sich zum Ritt bereitete, bat sein Sohn, der jung Roland, er möge ihn mitziehen lassen, denn "Vermeint Ihr mich zu jung und schwach, dass ich mit Riesen stritte, doch bin ich nicht zu winzig mehr, Euch nachzutragen Euern Speer, samt Eurem guten Schilde".
3) Nach langen Umherstreifen im Ardenner Wald hatte Milon sich unter einer Eiche zum Schlummer ausgestreckt, während jung Roland wachte. Da plötzlich sieht dieser den Riesen, gross und wild, mit dem blitzenden Kleinod im Schilde, vom Berg herniedersteigen. "Was ist das für ein Schrecken, denkt er, soll ich den lieben Vater mein im besten Schlaf erwecken? Es wachet ja sein gutes Pferd, es wacht sein Speer, sein Schild und Schwert, es wacht Roland der junge". Er ergreift also des Vaters Waffen, besteigt dessen Schlachtross und reitet dem Riesen entgegen.
4) Der Riese lacht über den kleinen Recken, der sich ihm mit dem grossen Rüstzeug in den Weg stellt, doch jung Roland meint:"Ein kleiner Mann, ein grosses Pferd, ein kurzer Arm, ein langes Schwert, muss eins dem andern helfen." Der plumpe Riese holt mächtig aus, um Roland mit seiner Stange zu zerschmettern, doch dieser unterläuft ihn und schlägt ihm unterm Schild die linke Hand ab, dass ihm Hand und Schild entrollen. Den durch den Verlust des Kleinodes entmutigten Gegner fällt er nun durch einen Stich ins Knie und schlägt ihm das Haupt ab. Darauf bricht er das lichte Kleinod aus des Toten Schilde und verbirgt es sorgsam in seinem Gewände. Dann kehrt er zurück zu seinem Vater, den er noch unter der Eiche schlafend findet, und streckt sich zu seiner Seite aus.
5) Kaiser Karl harrt in Sorgen der Heimkehr seiner Helden. Endlich finden sich diese einer nach dem andern ein. Alle haben die Stätte des Kampfes aufgefunden und jeder bringt ein Beutestück davon mit, der das Haupt des Riesen, jener dessen Speer, ein anderer das Schwert, ja einer hat sogar den Schild, doch das Kleinod ist leider ausgebrochen.
6) Schliesslich naht auch Milon von Anglant, sehr niedergeschlagen da er ebenfalls nur die Kampfesstätte gesehen hat und nun wähnt, er habe Sieg und Ehre schmählich verschlafen. Doch als sie sich dem Schlosse nähern, entfernt Roland den Zierat in der Mitte des väterlichen Schildes und setzt das Kleinod dafür ein,"das gab so wunderklaren Schein, als wie die liebe Sonne". Der Kaiser ruft dem Ritter froh entgegen:"Heil Milon von Anglante, der hat den Riesen übermannt, ihm abgehauen Haupt und Hand, das Kleinod ihm entrissen", und als Milon sich erstaunt an seinen Sohn um Aufklärung wendet, spricht dieser bescheidentlich:"Um Gott, Herr Vater, zürnt mir nicht, dass ich erschlug den groben Wicht, derweil Ihr eben schliefet". Das war, so erzählt die Sage, Rolands erste Waffentat.

I più valorosi dei cavalieri presenti, sentendo questo discorso, si fecero portare il cavallo e l'armatura e si misero immediatamente a cavalcare alla ricerca del gigante.
2) Anche Milon di Anglant, cognato dell'imperatore, si unì a loro e mentre si preparava alla cavalcata suo figlio, il giovane Orlando, gli chiese di farlo andare con lui, poichè: "Voi credete che io sia troppo giovane e debole per combattere con il gigante, ma non sono tuttavia più così piccolo per portarVi la Vostra spada ed il Vostro buon Scudo”.
3) Dopo un lungo girovagare per la foresta delle Ardenne Milon si era steso sotto una quercia per sonnecchiare, mentre il giovane Orlando faceva la guardia. Improvvisamente questi vide il gigante, grande e selvaggio, con il gioiello che scintillava sullo scudo, scendere i fianchi di una montagna. "Sarebbe tutto qui lo spavento", pensava,"che io debba svegliare il mio caro padre dal suo sonno migliore? Gli stanno facendo la guardia il suo buon cavallo, la sua spada, il suo scudo e gli fa la guardia il giovane Orlando". Egli afferra quindi le armi del padre, sale sul suo cavallo da battaglia e cavalca incontro al gigante.
4) Il gigante ride del piccolo eroe, che gli sbarra la strada con quella grande armatura, ma tuttavia il giovane Orlando pensa:" Un piccolo uomo, un grande cavallo, un braccio corto, ma una lunga spada, si devono aiutare a vicenda". Il pesante gigante stende il braccio per sfracellare Orlando con la sua stanga, ma questo lo attacca sotto alla posizione di guardia e da sotto lo scudo gli tronca la mano sinistra, così che gli cascano via mano e scudo. L'avversario scoraggiato dalla perdita del gioiello, casca in ginocchio in seguito ad una stoccata e lui gli stacca la testa con un fendente. Quindi stacca il gioiello dallo scudo del morto e lo nasconde con cura nei suoi vestiti. Quindi ritorna dal padre, che trova ancora addormentato sotto la quercia, e gli si stende accanto.
5) L'Imperatore Carlo attende con apprensione il ritorno a casa dei suoi eroi. Alla fine questi si ripresentano uno ad uno. Tutti hanno trovato il luogo del combattimento ed ognuno porta con sé un pezzo del bottino, uno la testa del gigante, uno la sua lancia, un altro la spada ed uno ha persino lo scudo, ma il gioiello è stato purtroppo staccato.
6) Alla fine si avvicina anche Milon di Anglant, molto abbattuto; anche lui ha solo visto il luogo del combattimento ed ora immagina che ha perso la vittoria e l'onore, perché dormiva profondamente. Tuttavia, come si stanno avvicinando al castello, Orlando stacca l'ornamento dallo scudo del padre e gli mette il gioiello al suo posto, "il quale emetteva una luce così meravigliosamente chiara come quella del nostro caro sole" .L'Imperatore si rivolge con gioia al cavaliere: "Salve, Milon di Anglante, che hai sopraffatto il gigante, gli hai staccato la mano e la testa e gli hai strappato via il gioiello" e poichè Milon di Anglant, meravigliato, si rivolge al figlio per averne dei chiarimenti, questi parla con modestia :"Perdonami, o padre, se ho abbattuto il ribaldo, ma questo avrebbe disturbato il tuo sonno". Questo fù, racconta la saga, il primo fatto d'armi di Orlando.
1) Un jour que le Roi Charlemagne, dans son palais de Aix-en-Chapelle, était assis à la table avec ses paladins et que ceux-ci exultaient en voyant le splendeur de la vaisselle royale, le roi observa qu'il y manquait cependant le plus précieux des joyaux du monde, celui qu'un rude géant portait sur son bouclier, au fond des Ardennes. Les plus intrépides des chevaliers présents entendent ce propos coururent aux armes, prirent leur coursiers et se lancèrent immédiatement à la recherche du géant.
2) Milon d'Anglant, le beau frère du roi, prit part à l'expédition. Son fils, le jeune Roland, le voyant partir le supplia de l'emmener avec lui en disant: "Si vous me croyez trop jeune et trop faible pour lutter contre le géant, je ne suis cependant plus si chétif que je ne sache porter votre lance et votre bouclier.
3) Après avoir parcouru la forêt en tout sens, Milon s'est étendu sous un chêne pour sommeiller pendant que le jeune Roland veille. Celui-ci aperçoit tout-à-coup le géant, d'aspect sauvage, descendant de la montagne en brandissant son bouclier, orné du joyaux précieux qui lance comme des éclairs. "Quelle surprise, pense Roland, mais faut-il pour celà que j'arrache mon père à son sommeil si calme? N'y a-t-il pas là son coursier fougueux, sa lance, son bouclier et son épée et, avant tout, Roland le jeune, qui veillent pour lui?" Il prend donc les armes de son père, monte le cheval de celui-ci et va à la rencontre du géant.
4) Le géant se rit du petit cavalier avec son énorme appareil de combat, qui vient pour lui barrer la route, mais le jeune Roland riposte: "Un petit homme, un grand cheval, un bras court et une longue épée, voilà qui s'accorde bien". Le géant fort maladroit, s'apprête à écraser son adversaire d'un grand coup, mais Roland s'élance sur lui et, par un mouvement agile, il réussit à lui trancher la main gauche, ce qui le prive du bouclier. Il attaque alors de plus belle son adversaire découragé par la perte du joyau et le terrasse enfin par un coup d'épée dans le genou; puis il le saisit par les cheveux et lui tranche la tête. Il ramasse en suite le bouclier du géant et en enlève le joyau qu'il cache soigneusement dans ses vêtements, après quoi il retourne près de son père qu'il trouve encore dormant sous le chêne, et s'étend à ses côtés.
5) Le roi Charlemagne attend avec inquiétude le retour de ses héros. Enfin ceux-ci reviennent l'un après l'autre. Tous ont trouvé le lieu du combat et chaqun d'eux apporte une part du butin; l'un la tête du géant, tel autre sa lance, un troisième son épée et le suivant son bouclier, dont le joyau toutefois est enlevé.
6) Finalement Milon d'Anglant arrive aussi, mais il est trop abattu; il a également trouvé le lieu du combat, toutefois il croit que son honneur a souffert pour avoir manqué à la lutte en se livrant au sommeil. Comme il s'approche du château, suivi de Roland, celui-ci détache la garniture de milieu du bouclier paternel et la remplace par le joyau du géant. L'ornement précieux qui repand une clairté merveilleuse, est aperçu par le roi qui salue le chevalier du cri: "Honneur à Milon d'Anglant qui a vaincu le terrible géant et lui a arraché son talisman!" Milon stupéfait se retournant alors vers son fils, celui-ci le supplie modestement par ces mots: "Pardonnez-moi, mon père, d'avoir abattu le butor, qui menaçait de troubler votre sommeil." Tel fut, comme dit la légende, le premier fait d'armes de Roland.

6) At the end approaches also Milon of Anglant, quite miserable; he has only seen the place of combat, and now imagines that has he has lost the victory and the honor, because he was asleep.
