Known to family, friends, and probably all who encountered her as Lil, she was the only one of Morris and Fannie’s children born outside the U.S. She was a strong woman who even as a child assumed a great deal of responsibility for supporting the family, and in other ways. In the early years, particularly, she was enough older than her siblings to help raise them. She left school after ninth grade and went to business school. After operating a delicatessen and confectionary, in 1939 Lil and Jack founded and successfully operated Babyland, an upscale Albany baby and children’s store in operation until 2014. It has been suggested that Lil’s commitment to quality merchandise was an outgrowth of her lack of nice things as a child. For example, she spoke of being taken to buy a new winter coat as a child, an exciting event. However, her Aunt Rose went along and advised that a larger coat be purchased so that it would fit for more than one year. Thus, according to Lil, it was too big one year and worn the next. As an adult, Lil was the family matriarch. She had a significant effect on her siblings and their children as well as on her own children. Carol says that from her mother she learned to be a strong woman, while Steve credits her with teaching him humility. Throughout her adult life when her siblings gathered for holidays or other special occasions, it was at her home. It was Lil more than anyone else who kept in touch with all family members, including those more distantly related.
