His death certificate identifies him as Joseph and indicates that he was a tailor. When Gedalia first arrived in New York, Irachmiel Sutin came to Ellis Island to meet him. He and Fayge had two daughters born while they were in Russia, both of whom died of diphtheria. It’s not clear whether the unknown daughter reported to have died in crossing was one of those two daughters or a third daughter. This family branch changed the spelling of their surname from Sutin to Sutton. Although not verifiable, it is believed that Zelich’s son, Sam, pressured his father to change the spelling in an attempt to avoid anti-semitism. The name change apparently occurred in the 1920s; when Charles was a Boy Scout and then Boy Scout leader; his 1922 and 1923 membership cards identified him as Sutin, but his 1925 card read Sutton. However, Zelich, who became a U.S. citizen in 1928, apparently did not change the spelling of his name because his 1928 certificate of literacy, required to vote, listed his name as Sutin. As a child, his daughter Lil sometimes went out collecting for him. In about 1916 the family moved from Albany to Rensselaer where Morris and his sister Tillie’s husband, Philip Cohen, had a junk business. The business was reasonably profitable during World War I, but junk prices plummeted after the war. The family moved back to Albany in 1922. Morris was a deeply religious man whose interests beyond striving to support his family centered around the synagogue. Morris and Fannie were naturalized in 1912.
