School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences

Research Report 2006
Head of School: Professor S L Amosun
School Profile
The research capacity of the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences continues to grow with the awarding of a PhD to Dr Sine Duma and the promotion of Dr Theresa Lorenzo to Associate Professor during 2006. The Writer’s Workshop and the Community Based Research Day were both highly successful and it is hoped that both events will become annual occurrences. Members of the Division of Occupational Therapy celebrated the launching of the book “Practice and service learning in occupational therapy: Enhancing potential in context”, which was edited by three of their staff members. Associate Professor Jennifer Jelsma was invited to join the WHO International Classifications of Functioning Reference Group.
The research focus area of the links between poverty and disability received a boost with the award of a large SANPAD grant to Maddie Duncan to fund work in this area. Martha Geiger was awarded a study grant to attend a course on Disability and Human Rights in Oslo and Professor Dele Amosun continues to be an active member of a large multinational study on risk behaviours in adolescents. Members of the Division of Physiotherapy contributed to the World Confederation of Physical Therapy – Africa Meeting by running three of the six workshops offered at the recent congress in Dar es Salaam. Helen Buchanan was awarded a Thutuka Scholarship and managed to secure a Visiting Scholars award from the Medical Research Council.
