As in several previous meetings, MPEG had a brainstorming session on future audio activities. Given the huge viewing angle of 100 degrees for HEVC displays, new audio coding technology may be required. Requirements focus on resolution of sound source localization, enhanced spatial audio for stereo displays as well as standardized down mixing. Potential technologies for HEVC audio may include SAOC and scene coding, especially concepts like Ambionics. Requirements and possible technologies are discussed in N12233 Thoughts on 3D Audio. The audio group is in need of experts familiar with new technologies related to sound field reproduction in order take the next step in audio representation and coding.
