Properties of Superfluids in Neutron Stars
Neutron stars contain the densest form of cold matter observable in the universe. Larger energy densities are transiently reached in relativistic heavy ion collisions, but the resulting matter is extremely hot. It is because neutron star matter is cold that many exotic states of matter have been proposed to exist inside these stars. One of these exotic states of matter is superfluidity. The idea that neutron stars contain a liquid interior of superfluid neutrons and superconducting protons comes from application of many body theory of condensed matter physics to such dense systems.
Superfluidity and superconductivity of nucleons in neutron star interiors play important role in the evolution of these stars. In this thesis, three of such dynamical properties are considered: First is the sudden spinups of neutron stars, which are called glitches. Second is cooling of neutron stars or thermal evolution. And the last one is precession. Glitches are attributed to angular momentum transfer from superfluid compenents of a neutron star to slowly rotating crust, which is acted upon electromagnetic radiation torque. Thermal evolution of neutron stars divided into three stages; cooling by neutrino emission, photon emission and possible reheating stages. For all of these stages superfluidity has prominent effects. Precession is a rotational mode, for which body symmetry axis and angular momentum axis are not aligned and superfluidity has implications for it.
This thesis aims to study glitch, cooling and precession phenomena with theories for neutron star superfluidity. Also a criticism on current issues about neutron star superfluidity thoughts is presented and a glitch statistics is made. In glitch statistics common properties of glitches of Vela like pulsars are considered and relevance of glitch models for statistics is investigated.
