At residence of George W. Mosier Rubles Mill, George Tp, Fayette Co Pa Aug 1, 1923 8 AM

I arrived here 20 minutes ago & have met Mr Mosier & their daughter Jennie whose hands are both doubled up like a closed fist from rheumatism & are also swollen therefrom & she says they have been that way for thirty years. She also says she has had to wear glasses since she was twenty yrs old by reason of an attack of scarlet fever she had had. She went in the bedroom adjoining the front room in which I am writing & brought out the old Black bible & went upstairs above this room & brought down the old Mosier Bibles that of her grandfather, Abraham Mosier & also the bible of her father George Moser with their record. I am copying from these three bibles in the order named, commencing on the next page, the several records they contain.

As I was leaving, Miss Moser [sic] said her big toes were doubled under the other toes & they were turned up over the top of her feet & she could get no shoes that she could wear. Geo W. Brown said George Moser owned 14 acres there which is good land in good repair & he has a good orchard with plenty of apples & a comfortable frame dwelling for his home. They have an old chair 150 yrs old that the Blacks brought from Ireland.

Mrs Brownfield says her father, Andrew Jackson Thompson, was born Apr 11, 1832 & died Apr 7, 1915. He was commonly called "Jack". He was born opposite Robert Long's old place, at Mortons Mills on the Thompson place, their own home, the son of Thomas Thompson, see above 1789 1851 & his wife Elizabeth Johnson. men selected by Perry to win the Battle on Lake Erie. She thinks his father's name was Joseph, possible William. It is not only possible, but very probable that he is great grandfather Wm Thompson's brother, when you note about Thomas's son Joseph going back to Cumberland Valley to hunt his brother Wm. Mrs B. says Eliza Dial nee Showalter, sister of E. Sturgis Showalter, now living at Waynesburgh Pa with her brother John there, said a few yrs ago that Samuel Thompson, who was older than "Jack", her father & who was his first cousin was then living in Ohio. He was son of Joseph Thompson who was an older brother of Thomas. Samuel Thompson above was unmarried & lived with two sisters in Ohio. The sister, however, had both died & he was living with a niece. She thought it was Youngstown O. Mrs B. says that Mrs Hannah Cline lives at Farm Ridge or 2*Ridge Farm Ills (being same county where Phil Sesler got two of his wives) has the old Thomas Thompson family bible which has the family record in it. She is a first cousin of Mrs B. being daughter of Euphamia Thompson, who married Alex Provins of Masontown Pa & who married Philip? Cline.

Thomas Thompson's brother, Joseph Thompson, married Elizabeth Showalter, a sister of old John Showalter

V10 Page 109
who was the father of James the father of E. Sturgis Showalter.

A. "Jack" Thompson had an elder brother Wm who went away abt 1835 & was never heard of afterwards. His brother, Joe went to the Cumberland Valley Pa to hunt him on the "Conocojig" where they heard, he had married a Hurst & was doing well.

Mrs B. says that my father had often been at their house & she well remembers him & said he & her father often talked of the family genealogy. She says of her grandfather Thos Thompson's children that:

1. Hannah Mosier 1814 1888 was the oldest 2. Joseph was next, then, 3. William, then 4. Aunt Rhoda Evans, then 5., Aunt Euphamia Provins, 6. Uncle John & then 7. Uncle Sam, twins, 8. Uncle George, who was father of Isaac F., Milton S., Mrs M.L. Reis, Mrs Harry B. Hadden, Mrs Wm M. Hinsey & Mrs Alice Smith, buried today, then 9. Aunt Nancy Dixon, then 10, Aunt Eliza Delay & 11. Aunt Frances Britt, wife of Evans Britt & 12. Aunt Lydia Stuck, wife of Sam, a bro of Jim R., 13 A. Jackson Thompson born 1832 the youngest.

His brother, Wm went off when he was 3 yrs old. Thomas had other brothers & sister than Joseph, but she don't know their names. Her father used to visit them about here. She sd her father married a daughter of Nathan Brownfield & also that Mrs C.M. Hogg of Cadiz O & her daughter Alberta, who married a Lynn had told her that she had given them the best information of the Brownfields of anyone they had seen.

We picked up a lot of apples from the ground & brought them with us.

We then drove to Old Frame & was:

Mrs Moser was in the store & looks very like her mother, Eliza Jane Keener Brown, widow of Saml Brown. She asked me to wait until her husband, John H. Moser who was out in the orchard came in which he soon did & she waited on some customers in the meantime. With their combined efforts, I got the following information from memory, she being the best, as they sd they had no written record but had been talking of making one. They said:

I have read over the days work & written down here what I had penciled down at Mrs Brownfield's & John H. Moser's. We went from Mrs Brownfield's to Geo M. Grimm's at Smithfield at noon & got some sandwiches & coffee for Mr Brown & Pallini.

Going into Haydentown Pa this morning Geo W. Brown pointed out at the left side of the road just as we were entering the town the site of the old Scythe & Sickle factory which was operated & owned by the early Victor of Haydentown. Coming in tonight, I asked
V10 Page 118
him about his daughter Sallie Victor who married Wm Swaney. He said she was a beautiful girl & woman & so strong & healthful & that she had sixteen children, one by Ross & fifteen by Swaney. James Jones, he said, married Annie Ross & her brother Ross of Greene Co Pa came over to visit the Jones's & met Sallie Victor & got her in the family way & the child was Alpheus H. Swaney, the father of Rose O. Ellenberger. I think Sallie married Wm Swaney before Alpheus was born & Daniel B. Swaney was one of her 15 children by him. Geo W. Brown said Wm Swaney told him he had made a mistake in marrying too young a woman. Geo W. said he though she was but 45 when her husband died & lived to be up in the 70s. he said the other Swaneys used to pick on Alph & he told them he wasn't their brother or of their Swaney tribe. He also told Capt J.M. Hustead the same. Alph's father, a handsome man, soon after went to South America, but came back later. James Jones & his wife Annie Ross were the parents of Jesse E. Jones & Reese H. Jones & Geo W. Brown said that Jesse E. Jones & Alph H. Swaney 1st cousins, looked as much alike as twins. Reese H. Jones' wife was a sister of Chas Greenlee.
V10 Page 119
Geo W. Brown said his mother was Maria Lyons who was a sister of Thos W. Lyons & they were children of John Lyons & John Lyons was a son of Wm Lyons who had 7 sons & 3 daughters viz: Jacob, James, Jesse, John, & Joseph & he couldn't recall the names of the other two, but said one of the girls married Wm Woods, one married Wm Morris & their son, John Morris, was father of Alva. The other Lyons girl mar Col John Morgan.

Margaret Josephine Fishbaugh had about as fine chiseled a forehead as I have ever seen & is a beautiful girl & her two sisters are attractive. He said old Luther Burchival [Burchinal?] (not Luther W.) married Annie Thompson, a sister, he said, of A "Jack", but she was not named by Mrs Brownfield & I think he must be mistaken & she probably was a sister of "Jack's" father, Thomas Thompson. Mr B. said she lived to be 91 yrs old & that Sallie M. Finley, now aged abt 87 was her daughter. See Mrs Brownfield about this.

could tell me her name. Upon asking her this afternoon, she said her name was Nancy Thompson, daughter of Charles who was a son of Joseph, but that she had married since & she would get her married name when she went home & let me know. See page 35 this book.

Sister Lenora T. Niccolls gave me last week when at her home Veech Place the Thompson coat of arms with the following explanation which she had written out. She also has the Niccolls coat of arms.

Thompson

Arms:

Or   on a fess indented azure

three stars argent; on a canton of the second the Sun in his splendor

Crest:

A cubit arm, erect nexted gules cuffed argent, holding in the hand five ears of wheat.

Motto:

Imlumine lucern Shine thou in the light

Thompson

Symbolic:

The fess represents the belt which in ancient times was worn over the armour by officials of rank at certain court functions

The stars denote fame, brilliancy & happy conditions   a star among his fellow men. The blue canton with the sun is a special augmentation of honor. It is given or granted only for special meritorious services. The hand and the ears of wheat indicate the ancestor followed agriculture as his occupation. The ears of wheat represent honorable fruits of successful enterprises. Same as the bountiful harvest from good seed.

In Lumin Lucem

Motto.

Lenora gave me this when at her house July 26, 1923 for a call with Cousin Kate Smith. I am filing it with the family letters.

Saml W. Henshaw Exr of Miss Mary E. Hadden gave me last week a leaf 10 1/2 by 8 inches with two closely written columns on both sides, one side containing the McClean record, being written in the fine even plain hand of Alexr McClean, same as our deed & will book records are written for the first fifty yrs of the County's existence when he was Register & Recorder. All of the McClean page except the Josephine A. McDermitt birth & his own & two other McClean deaths, after his own are in his handwrite. Also the record of the first four Hadden's death is in his writing. The record of births & deaths of his father, mother & brother Alex M. are in the handwriting of Armstrong Hadden. The other record is, I think, written by Miss Mary E. Hadden.
