Mr Chas P. Schwer, Alwillah's husband, who came to America from Switzerland & joined the Union Army as a very young boy, gave me a newspaper clipping published he said, in 1916 which I am also returning today & am copying here:

"The Boys of Sixty One"

"Surprise is often expressed that there are so many veterans of the Civil War still living. The fact is that the war was fought at least on the northern side by boys. Of the 2,159,798 enlisted, there were only 46,626 who were over twenty five years old. The official figures of the age at enlistment in the Civil War were read in the House of Representatives the other day by Joseph C. Cannon and they are as follows:

Those 10 years and under 25

Those 11 years and under 38

Those 12 years and under 225

Those 13 years and under 300

Those 14 years and under 1,523

Those 15 years and under 104,987

Those 16 years and under 231,051

Those 17 years and under 844,891

Those 18 years and under 1,151,438

Those 21 years and under

(these two classes make the total

number of enlistments) 2,159,798

Those 22 years and over

(these two classes make the total

number of enlistments) 618,511

Those 25 years & over 46,626

It will be noticed from this statement that the greatest number of enlistments were

V10 Page 205
of boys eighteen & under. In a great number of cases, these boys became officers before they were twenty, some of them even reaching the rank of Captain. The methods of war have so changed that in future armies, there must be a far greater portion of mature men. There must be a large number who can handle the intricate complex & death dealing machinery & engines of destruction.

But as far as the Civil War was concerned, the fighting was done by boys & the phrase "boys of Sixty One" is a literal expression of the truth & not metaphorical. The men of big business, the representatives of hundreds of millions which they were able to accumulate by the sacrifices made by these boys, assembled at Chicago the other day to hold a National Convention, but they forgot all about the "boys". There are still 400,000 of them alive".

Mrs Louise Mabel Moser came in 522 this afternoon at 4:22 with her two daughters, my wards & her son in law & were there half an hour during which I paid her, on acct of my wards boarding & clothing & taxes she had paid $130 odd for each ward being the first payt on acct of the sale of their 20 A each of Ohio Coal. They all gave me the following family record, each one giving their own age & the others verifying it.

year, born Apr 29, 1826, the daughter of Samuel Crayne, she & he said. She had never heard of Tickacus Rose or his wife Catherine Jack who was born Dec 14, 1754, nor of their children & knew nothing of John Fulton who she married a few yrs after Rose died. They said the oldest Fulton they knew was Evans Fulton living north of them on the ridge so we took the road turning north at their home & went 5 miles passing a church & found him in his garden picking up potatoes he had ploughed out. He said he was 73 yrs old, the son of Samuel Fulton & grandson of John Fulton. He said his grandfather, John Fulton had several children & his wife was Belle & that he was not married twice. He said his father had a brother John who went west, but that did not go back far enough. He never heard of Tickacus Rose or George Boyd Rose or Catharine Jack, but said there were a family of Roses living over by Clarksville Pa. He said John Rose who lived to be an old man & who lived in the neighborhood & who Mrs Maria Cox spoke of had not left any children. Mr Fulton said the Wash Greene Co line went through his front portico & that his house was in West Bethlehem Tp, Wash Co Pa. Mr Cox said Pollock had paid up the interest on the mtge we gave for $6000 which he assumed. JVT

Miss Finley gave me some papers she had recd from Scotland to bring with me & copy & some she had gotten from Mabel Linley [Smiley?] of Lincoln Neb whose mother she sd was a Finley & from whom I have at home an unread letter. At Residence of Harry White No 458 Morgan St, Dickson City, Lackawanna Co Pa Sept 20, 1923 10 AM

I left Scranton Pa on the Carbondale St car at 9 AM & got off at the bank at Dickson City, turned around the Bank to the right & going a short square turned to the right & walked out Morgan St to this number arriving ten minutes ago & was met by Della, wife of Harry White, a large clean skinned handsome woman & she took me in the basement or living quarters of their two story & a basement frame house where I met her father, Daniel Markle. Neither of them know of any old Markle Bibles nor of his father's bible. They say that his father, Jacob Markle & his mother Eunice Sherman were living at Ledgedale, Wayne Co Pa & were probably taken from there, by Mrs Fish, who Della thinks was his sister, to Rochester NY where they think they both died, but he says he never saw them again. Mr Markle's Uncle Cornelius Markle lived at Honesdale Pa where he died & in his last days sharpened scythes, sickles etc. His wife was Eunice Van der Mark & she is living in Honesdale Pa at 1223 Dyberry Place with her daughter Rose Dunning wife of Eugene C. Dunning. She is past 75. Della's mother was an Osborne
V10 Page 210
& she has the old Osborne bible with their record & also her own father's record. Her father, Daniel Markle was born Oct 9, 1843 in New York State on the Mohawk River near North Norwich?, the son of Jacob Markle & his wife Eunice Sherman. He was married Oct 4, 1869 his cft saying he was from Panpack, Wayne Co Pa near Pike Co line (just across the River) to Eliza J. Mattison of Salem, Wayne Co Pa who was born Sept 5, 1851 the daughter of Sm A. Mattison & his wife Martha N. Schoonhover Mr Markle's children were:

1. Martha Alice Markle born Mch 29, 1871

2. Burton David Markle born Sept 26, 1876

3. George Reuben Markle born Aug 29, 1881

4. Elizabeth Della Markle born Oct 2, 1889

There were two other children older than Della of whom there was no record kept as they died in infancy. So far as they both know, the children were all born in Ledgedale, Wayne Co Pa.

Deaths

1. Martha Alice Markle died June 2, 1875

2. Burton David Markle died Oct 1909 at Binghamton NY & is buried there. He was a baker. He married Effie Wright from Salem, Wayne Co Pa, a daughter of Eugene Wright & his wife Mary. She is living around Clarks Summit Pa near here & is a nurse & has two children named for her father & mother:

1. Eugene Markle, aged abt 17

2. Mary Markle, aged abt 15
V10 Page 211
Deaths continued

Eliza J. Markle died Mch 30, 1916

Infant boy, son of Della born in forepart of July 1913 & died aged two days

3. George Reuben Markle was in the Spanish American War for 3 yrs & was at Manila P.F. after his 3 yrs expired, he came home & was married at Carbondale Pa Feby 22, 1905 to Ethel Stanton, daughter of Charles L. Stanton & his wife Nettie Woodruff. He divorced her after two years, after having one child, Irene Markle who was abt 3 or 4 mos old when the parents were divorced & is now abt 18 or 19 yrs old. The last Della heard, her mother had put her in the school at Scotland Pa for her education. After a few yrs, probably 4 or 5 yrs, he married Miss Florence Burrell, a divorced woman, step daughter of Adebert Day whose wife is Florence's mother. Thinks he was married in Carbondale the second time & had one child, Jessie Markle born before Della was married & aged 15 or 16. They were not living together 4 or 5 yrs ago when Della heard from another sister in law that Florence had told her she was married to another man & thinks then they were divorced. Don't know where Jessie is & haven't heard from her brother George Reuben for 4 or 5 yrs. He might have gone to World War or might have died of flu.

4. Elizabeth Della Markle was married
V10 Page 212
Aug 26, 1908 at Carbondale Pa by Rev Charles Lee Presbyterian minister. (He also married her brother Geo Reuben & Ethel Stanton) to Harry Harrison White, who was born Aug 26, 1888 the son of Charles White & his wife Matilda Osborne a step sister of Della's mother. Matilda's father was the second husband of Della's mother's mother & she was his second wife.

Della has two children living & lost one as above.

1. Thelma Matilda White born Nov 22, 1909

2. Infant son born & died July 1913

3. Gerald Eugene White born Aug 18, 1920

Thelma M. & the infant son were born in Jermyn Pa & Gerald Eugene was born here in Dickson City in this house.

Mrs White says they were Presbyterians but there is no Presbyterian Church here, so she goes to the Primitive Methodist & Thelma M. baptized a Presbyterian goes to the Bradley M.E. Church at the City line Scranton Pa.

Leaving 11:25 AM

Hotel Casey Room 809 Scranton Pa Sept 10, 1923 9:55 PM

I got in here from NY City last night at 9;30 PM & took a half hour standing shower bath with water at temperature of 111. Went out to Dickson City as noted Pages 209 to 212 inclusive. Mr Markle

V10 Page 213
who will complete his 80th yr next month has no mind left at all scarcely & could tell but little of his family, could only recall one viz Cornelius of his father's brothers & sisters & did not know the name of his grandfather Markle. He is a small slender man much the build of his brother Eli of San Diego Calif. He was unshaven, but asked Mr Quinton, a roomer, I believe to whom Mrs White introduced me to tell the barber he wanted a shave. I did not see Mrs White's daughter Thelma. When I got up to the street car line, I saw the 11:30 Am car going into Scranton, so I waited in the rain under cover at the girls entrance to Columbus School & at noon took the street car to Carbondale & the bus not leaving for Honesdale for 2 hrs & the train not until 4 hrs, I hired a taxi to drive me over to see the widow of Cornelius Markle at 1223 Dyberry Place, Honesdale Pa. Her daughter, Rosette, a heavy set woman of medium height, admitted me & her mother, Mrs Markle came right downstairs. She is heavier & shorter a little than her daughter & between them they gave me what is recorded on the next two pages written with Mrs Dunning's fountain pen. They both said that Cornelius, in speaking of the Markles at Hazleton Pa thought they were his cousin, son of his Uncle Henry. Mrs Markle sd she had had the "flu" very bad & since then her memory has not been good. Both she & Daniel Markle were very unsatisfactory by reason of their total lack of knowledge about the earlier ancestors. Mrs Dunning said her son was a fine capable fellow & was over 6 ft. She showed me a photo of her father, Cornelius, whiskers all over his face which was a good kindly one. See page 217.
V10 Page 214 & V10 Page 215
[Descendant Chart]
Cornelius Markle. They are not sure of his name. Mrs Eunice Markle first said she thought it was Wm, but one obituary said Cornelius's father was Cornelius & another sd his father was Jacob whose wife was Betsy Connor Markle. Mrs Eunice Markle thinks it was not Cornelius, but knows that his mother was a Connor. He lived in Ulster Co NY & she thinks his business was following the canal. He married Betsy Conner. She died when Cornelius was born ie when he was four days old. He died when Cornelius was 10 or 12 yrs old. Mrs Markle thinks he died in Ulster Co NY. See Page 365 also 380 & 379.
