DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY
DIVISION OF OPHTHALMOLOGY
HEAD OF DIVISION - Professor A D N Murray
Divisional Profile
The Division of Ophthalmology combines an academic hospital service with University teaching, clinical training and research. It provides specialist tertiary care clinical services to patients in the Western Cape and beyond. The Paediatric Ophthalmology Unit is at present the only one in sub-Saharan Africa. The Ocular Oncology Unit provides a brachytherapy service to patients from all over Africa and other countries.
The Strabismus Clinic receives referrals from all over sub-Saharan Africa. The Division is involved in training postgraduate nurses in Ophthalmology and in providing training for primary care medical officers. The Division of Ophthalmology provides in hospital training to 187 fifth year medical students and is also involved in specialist training of both local graduates and graduates from other countries.
An outreach programme in the Western Cape supplements the training of students and primary care health workers in the fundamentals of Ophthalmology.
The Division places a strong emphasis on clinical research.
The Division continues to function as a true academic unit with its members making significant contributions at both local and international meetings. Staff shortages and the financial crisis have limited the productivity of the Division.
The corneal clinic is investigating the use of amniotic membrane and stem cells in treating corneal and conjunctival ulcers. The paediatric unit is involved in an ongoing study of retinopathy of prematurity in the current health care system and a study collecting prospective and retrospective data on congenital cataract surgery with the "Helen Keller Worldwide" Organisation. The retinal unit is involved in a multicentric randomized study evaluating the use of intravitreal hyaluronidase to clear vitreous haemorrhage. The strabismus unit is involved in a study of botulinum toxin in traumatic sixth nerve palsy and a study to determine the degree of binocular vision in patients with untreated infantile esotropia who are aligned as visual adults. The uveitis clinic is involved in a study assessing aqueous PCR levels in patients with Luetic disease and a prospective trial to establish the role of intravitreal corticosteroids in addition to antibiotics for endophthalmitis. The ocular inflammatory disease unit is involved in a study evaluating the use of short TAU inversion recovery MRI scanning in active thyroid associated ophthalmopathy (TAO), and the use of immunosuppressive agents in active TAO.

DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY DIVISION OF ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY
Head of Division - Professor Johan Walters
Divisional Profile
Drs Ehlers, Ahmed, Polley and von Bormann were successful in the College of Medicine Part II. Dr I Zondagh is currently undertaking the Synthesis AO Spinal Fellowship under the tutelage of Dr R Dunn. The Surgical Research Day was well organised by Dr Dunn on behalf of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, with outstanding contributions from all departments.
Additional funding for Arthroplasty surgery on young patients has afforded the opportunity to report on the short term solio economic outcome and cost effectiveness of Joint Replacement in this group in our community.
Dr van Heerden was appointed to the department in July 2006.
The department was saddened by the unfortunate passing of Lloyd Turner in a mountaineering accident and Guillaume du Toit after a short illness.
